Job Summary

Northrop Grumman’s Armament Systems Business Unit is searching for a Systems Engineer to join its Specialty Engineering team in Plymouth, MN. The role supports munition, fuzing, and weapon system development programs across multiple engineering domains.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with team members to plan and execute specialty engineering tasks across domains such as Systems Safety, Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Product Cybersecurity, Integrated Logistics Support, Product Support, Human Factors, and Unit Production Cost Modeling.
  • Perform detailed analyses—including Failure Mode Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and System Hazard Analysis (SHA)—in close collaboration with design engineering.
  • Lead safety programs from planning through safety acceptance with Safety Review Boards.
  • Act as a lead specialty engineer during design reviews, failure investigations, and customer working group meetings.
  • Support bidding and proposal development in collaboration with the Specialty Engineering Manager.
  • Define, track, and verify requirements that align with system development objectives and specialty engineering domains.
  • Coordinate with Test Engineering and Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) to develop procedures that ensure safe test conduct and system manufacturing.
Qualifications

Level 2 – Systems Engineer

  • Bachelor of Science in an engineering discipline plus at least 2 years of experience, or a master’s degree with no additional experience.
  • Ability to obtain a DoD Secret clearance.
  • Strong interest and ability to work closely with engineers across disciplines (Systems, Mechanical, Electrical, Software, Production).
  • Willingness to learn across multiple engineering domains.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other toolsets.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.

Level 3 – Principal Systems Engineer

  • Bachelor of Science in an engineering discipline plus at least 5 years of experience, or a master’s degree with at least 3 years of experience.
  • Ability to obtain a DoD Secret clearance.
  • Strong interest and ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Willingness to learn across multiple engineering domains.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other toolsets.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience leading technical efforts and mentoring others.
  • Experience planning, executing, and delivering customer deliverables on time.
  • Experience performing engineering analyses such as hazard analysis, FMECA, FTA, etc.
  • Aerospace and defense product experience.
  • Experience with MIL-STD-882E System Safety or equivalent standard.
  • Relevant specialty engineering domain experience (e.g., Safety, Maintainability, Reliability, Cybersecurity).
  • Certification in a relevant engineering domain or discipline (e.g., CSP, CISSP, CSEP, CRE).
  • Experience presenting technical information to large audiences.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Primary Level Salary Range: $87,600 – $131,400.
  • Secondary Level Salary Range: $108,800 – $163,200.
  • Potential eligibility for overtime, shift differential, discretionary bonus, and long‑term incentives for senior roles.
