Job summary

Wabtec Corporation in the United States is seeking a Systems Engineer to support the design, development, testing, and deployment of our Train Handling portfolio, including Trip Optimizer and Locotrol.

You will work under guidance from senior engineers, contribute to requirements, verification, and product enhancements, and apply AI-enabled tools to improve research, problem solving, and productivity while traveling as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Mathematics or Computer Science from an accredited college or university.
• 1–2 years hands-on design, requirements development and implementation experience involving engineering systems, hardware/software, and/or data information systems.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work in a cross-functional, global environment.
• Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally.

Responsibilities

• Support the design, development, testing, and enhancement of Train Handling solutions while applying sound engineering principles and established development processes.
• Assist in gathering, documenting, and analyzing customer and system requirements to support product development and continuous improvement activities.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Product Management, Software Engineering, Train Control, Office Systems, Safety, Validation, and Applications Engineering, to support project execution and successful product delivery.
• Participate in requirements reviews, design reviews, verification activities, and technical discussions throughout the product development lifecycle.
• Assist in troubleshooting technical issues, analyzing system behavior, and supporting resolution efforts under the guidance of senior engineers.
• Contribute to field testing, validation, and evaluation activities for train automation and optimization solutions.
• Support the preparation of technical documentation, reports, project updates, and engineering deliverables.
• Work with railroad subject matter experts and engineering teams to learn operational concepts and apply them to product development efforts.
• Develop knowledge of industry standards, engineering best practices, and emerging technologies relevant to train automation, optimization, and distributed control systems.
• Utilize AI-enabled tools and technologies to improve productivity, accelerate learning, support analysis activities, and enhance engineering outcomes.

Who will you be working with?

Wabtec's Train Handling solutions include Trip Optimizer® and Locotrol®, which work together to optimize train performance and automate freight operations. Trip Optimizer creates and executes fuel-efficient operating plans that meet schedule and train-handling requirements, while Locotrol enables coordinated control of distributed locomotives throughout the train. Together, these technologies improve train handling, fuel efficiency, operational safety, and the ability to operate longer and heavier trains.

How will you make a difference?

As a Systems Engineer, you will support the design, development, testing, and deployment of Wabtec's Train Handling portfolio. Working under the guidance of experienced engineers, you will contribute to requirements development, system analysis, verification activities, and product enhancements while adhering to established engineering processes and standards.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an AI-enabled mindset, leveraging AI tools to improve research, problem-solving, productivity, and technical decision-making. You will continuously learn emerging technologies and apply data-driven insights to help deliver high-quality solutions that meet customer and business needs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Foundational understanding of systems engineering principles and product development processes.
• Exposure to software, controls, automation, transportation, or embedded systems through coursework, internships, or project experience.
• Familiarity with systems architecture concepts and distributed systems is a plus.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Interest in applying AI-enabled tools and data-driven approaches to engineering challenges.
• Knowledge of railroad operations, AAR standards, CENELEC standards, or safety-
  critical systems is preferred but not required.

Our job titles may span more than one career level. The salary rate for this role is currently $62100-85300 The actual salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, education, business needs, market demands and work location. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. More information on offered benefits, which include health, welfare, and retirement, are available at mywabtecbenefits.com.
