BWXT is seeking a Systems Engineer for Digital Manufacturing & Systems Integration in Jonesborough, TN. You will lead the design and integration of the digital, automated manufacturing environment supporting HPDU production, bridging engineering, IT, operations and enterprise systems.
You will drive architecture, vendor evaluations, and continuous improvement while ensuring compliance with nuclear quality and cybersecurity standards. On-site position with competitive benefits.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Industrial, Systems Engineering, or related discipline.
- Ten (10+) years of industrial manufacturing experience.
- Experience supporting complex manufacturing facilities with integrated digital and operational systems.
- Demonstrated experience integrating engineering, manufacturing, operations, and IT systems and teams.
- Must be a U.S. citizen capable of obtaining and maintaining a DOE clearance.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain the integrated manufacturing systems architecture for HPDU production.
- Lead integration of MES, laboratory systems, automation, ERP, analytics, and engineering tools.
- Define and execute a digital roadmap with IT for phased manufacturing deployment.
- Evaluate and implement AI-enabled tools, digital twins, MBSE, and advanced automation.
- Develop system requirements, interface control documents, and integration plans.
- Ensure compliance with nuclear quality, cybersecurity, and regulatory standards.
- Support commissioning, readiness, and sustainment of digital and manufacturing systems.

As a Systems Engineer supporting BWXT’s High Purity Depleted Uranium (HPDU) production capability, you will play a lead role in developing and integrating the digital, automated, and highly connected manufacturing environment required for pilot, initial-rate, and future full-scale production. You will drive systems architecture, digital manufacturing technology deployment, automation integration, and cross-disciplinary requirements management to establish BWXT’s “Facility of the Future.” This role bridges engineering, IT, operations, quality, and enterprise systems—ensuring they operate cohesively to support a scalable, compliant, and high‑performance production capability.
On-site in Jonesborough, Tennessee
- Develop and maintain the integrated manufacturing systems architecture for HPDU production.
- Lead integration of manufacturing execution systems (MES), laboratory systems, automation platforms, material tracking technologies, ERP systems, analytics platforms, and engineering tools into a unified operating environment.
- Partner with IT to define and execute a digital roadmap supporting phased manufacturing deployment.
- Evaluate, recommend, and implement advanced technologies including AI-enabled tools, industrial analytics, digital twins, model‑based engineering tools, and advanced automation.
- Support requirements development, interface control, and system integration across engineering and operational disciplines.
- Lead vendor and technology evaluations for manufacturing software, automation systems, analytics platforms, and digital tooling.
- Develop system requirements, functional specifications, interface control documents, and integration plans.
- Ensure manufacturing systems comply with nuclear quality requirements, configuration management standards, cybersecurity controls, and regulatory expectations.
- Support commissioning, operational readiness, and long‑term sustainment of digital and manufacturing systems.
- Drive continuous improvement through data analytics and digital‑transformation initiatives across the production enterprise.

The HPDU program is deploying a first-of-a-kind manufacturing capability through a phased strategy—from pilot production to full-scale operations. Success depends on seamless integration of manufacturing systems, digital tools, automation, quality systems, and enterprise data environments. This Systems Engineer will serve as the technical integrator across these disciplines, ensuring the Jonesborough facility delivers a scalable, digitally enabled manufacturing capability that supports operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and future growth.

Pay: $99,410- $157,000
The base salary range for this position in Tennessee (US-TN) at the start of employment is expected to be between $99,410 and $157,000 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job‑related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at‑will,’ unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
