Job summary

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks a Systems Analyst to advance military mission planning through systems engineering and analytic rigor. You will shape requirements, analyze capabilities, and support planning tools used by warfighters, collaborating with engineers and sponsors across multiple domains.

You will contribute to research, design reviews, and data-driven recommendations, delivering clear briefings and reports to inform decision-makers and program direction.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, mathematics, physics, or equivalent.
  • Two or more years of systems engineering work, data analysis activities, and/or requirements development/analysis.
  • Experience in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Programming experience with MATLAB or Python.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Active Final Secret security clearance; U.S. citizenship.
  • Experience in engineering teams of 3+ people.
  • Technical expertise in the design/analysis/operation of military systems.

  • Provide thought leadership on requirements analysis and capability development for planning, battle management aid, and coordination systems.
  • Participate in requirements and design reviews to align with sponsor directions.

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL! In A5C, we develop and deploy advanced planning capabilities and solutions directly into the hands of the warfighter, empowering them to design dominant defenses for maximum performance across multiple simultaneous multiple missions, multiple services, and multiple command echelon planning levels and domains.
We are seeking an enthusiastic team member with software engineering experience willing to take on exciting assignments and willing to learn about the complexity of military systems.

As a Systems Analyst
  • Your primary responsibility will be conducting system engineering activities and system analytical efforts related to military mission planning.
  • You will provide systems engineering thought leadership and talents focusing on requirements analysis and capability development for planning, battle management aid, and coordination systems and tools.
  • You will participate in requirements and design reviews and requirements reviews to ensure sponsor direction is established and assess prime contractor compliance with sponsor directions.
  • You will provide domain know-how for military test events and real-world operational scenarios by conducting research, studies, and analysis to provide supporting data and associated recommendations for the Missile Defense Agency and Navy decision-makers.
  • You will develop and deliver presentations to sponsors and collaborators that effectively communicate proposed solutions and analysis.
  • You will author reports that bring together system definitions, requirements, analysis, and technical recommendations.
Qualifications
  • Possess a bachelor’s degree in engineering, mathematics, physics, or equivalent academic backgrounds.
  • Have two or more years of experience in systems engineering work, data analysis activities, and/or requirements development/analysis.
  • Have shown success working in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Have programming experience with MATLAB or Python.
  • Have demonstrated success in working in an engineering team of 3 or more people.
  • Exhibit excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Exercise excellent critical thinking.
  • Have technical expertise in the design/analysis/operation of military systems.
  • Hold an active Final Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

  • Possess an advanced degree (master’s degree or PhD degree) in systems engineering, applied mathematics, applied physics, or equivalent academic backgrounds.
  • Have five or more years of experience in systems engineering work, data analysis activities, and/or requirements development/analysis germane to military systems pertinent to air and missile defense.
  • Have two or more years of experience applying AI/ML to real-world problems.
  • Have experience reviewing and/or authoring specifications of military systems.
  • Have technical expertise in the design/analysis/operation of Navy mission planning systems.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign‑on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
