Systems Engineer – Active Secret Clearance - Travel to Client Site

Work Model: Hybrid – approximately 65% remote / 35% customer site

Compensation: $145,000–$165,000

About the Role

We are seeking a Systems Engineer to support a mission-critical software environment for a U.S. Department of Defense program.

This is a hands-on engineering and product support role supporting software used in secure operational environments. You will work across troubleshooting, system sustainment, software releases, testing, documentation, customer support, and field engineering.

The right person will be comfortable working directly with end users and technical teams to investigate problems, understand system behavior, and keep complex applications running reliably.

This position is primarily remote but requires regular access to customer locations in the Washington, DC / Baltimore, MD region, including locations near Frederick and Annapolis Junction, Maryland.

What You'll Do

Technical Support & Troubleshooting

• Investigate and resolve technical issues reported by customers and field engineering teams.
• Troubleshoot applications using logs, system behavior, configuration files, user reports, and other technical data.
• Diagnose application and environment-related issues across Linux and web-based systems.
• Document technical findings, customer impact, workarounds, and recommended next steps.
• Communicate clearly with customers, engineers, developers, and program stakeholders.

Software Releases & Sustainment

• Support software releases, patches, security updates, vulnerability remediation, and customer deployments.
• Help prepare installers, scripts, dependencies, documentation, and other release materials.
• Assist with software installation, upgrades, configuration, patching, and validation.
• Troubleshoot issues identified during deployment, testing, and production use.

Testing, Documentation & Training

• Perform manual testing, installation validation, and release verification.
• Develop and maintain installation guides, release notes, technical procedures, support documentation, and customer-facing materials.
• Help maintain training materials and technical environments.
• Participate in customer training for system operators and administrators.
• Provide technical guidance to engineers supporting customer environments.
• Assist with system integration, backend troubleshooting, configuration, and validation.
• Provide additional support during critical deployments, outages, coverage gaps, or other operational needs.
• Participate in occasional customer-site activities and travel as required.

Engineering Collaboration

• Work with software development, support, field engineering, and program teams to resolve customer issues.
• Translate field problems into clear technical information for engineering teams.
• Support defect investigation, workaround testing, change validation, and release activities.
• Maintain clear status, priorities, risks, and next steps for assigned technical issues.

Required Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in systems engineering, product support, systems integration, field engineering, system administration, software testing, or a similar customer-facing technical role.
• 5+ years supporting or troubleshooting Java-based applications.
• Strong hands-on experience with Linux, command-line tools, Bash scripting, SQL, application logs, system errors, and configuration files.
• Experience deploying and troubleshooting web application environments, including technologies such as Jetty, Apache, IIS, or similar platforms.
• Working knowledge of networking, sockets, web services, PKI, certificates, and key management.
• Experience supporting software releases, patches, security updates, vulnerability remediation, or production deployment packages.
• Experience performing manual QA, validation testing, installation testing, or customer acceptance testing.
• Ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues using logs, configuration data, system behavior, and other available evidence.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to work with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Current DoD 8140/DCWF qualification appropriate for the customer environment. CompTIA Security+ satisfies the requirement for this role.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in one or more of the following areas is helpful but not required:

• Virtual machines, cloud environments, Microsoft Azure, or development/test infrastructure.
• Secure government or military communications and messaging systems.
• DoD operational messaging, defense messaging, naval messaging, information transport, or similar mission systems.
• Using AI-enabled engineering tools or copilots for log analysis, troubleshooting, ticket triage, documentation, scripting, testing, knowledge management, or workflow automation.

Education

A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline is preferred.

Equivalent professional experience may substitute for a degree:

• Four additional years of directly relevant technical experience may substitute for a bachelor's degree.
• An associate degree plus two additional years of relevant technical experience may also qualify.
• Relevant military technical training, industry certifications, or equivalent technical training may be considered alongside demonstrated hands-on experience.

Relevant experience should include meaningful work supporting areas such as Linux systems, Java applications, web environments, application logs, scripting, configuration management, PKI/certificates, software releases, testing, systems integration, or mission-critical software.

Security Requirements

• Active DoD Secret clearance is required at the time of application.
• Candidates must be U.S. citizens.
• Candidates must also be eligible to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI clearance with full-scope polygraph based on program requirements.
• Employment may be contingent upon successfully completing the required security investigation and maintaining eligibility for access to classified information.
