Job description

DESE Research, Inc. is seeking a talented, motivated, and enthusiastic Systems Engineer to join a multidisciplinary engineering team supporting the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD) mission. This mid-career role focuses on systems integration, interface definition, requirements management, risk management, and system-level engineering for complex missile defense systems. If you are passionate about systems engineering and want to apply your skills to mission-critical defense programs supporting the U.S. warfighter, we want to hear from you!

Job Details:

The candidate will work as part of an engineering team supporting systems engineering and integration activities for the GMD system. The role requires an understanding of system performance and architecture across sensors, detection and tracking, ground systems, boosters, kill vehicles, threats, and associated interfaces. The candidate will develop and review Interface Control Documents (ICDs), manage requirements and verification artifacts, support risk assessment and mitigation, and define system-level transmit/receive (Tx/Rx) requirements and interfaces for weapon communications.

A successful candidate will possess strong systems-thinking and analytical skills, communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders, and be comfortable interfacing with program offices, operational subject matter experts (SMEs), and government customers.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform systems integration and interface definition activities for complex defense systems.
  • Develop, analyze, and maintain system and subsystem interfaces.
  • Conduct risk assessments and support risk mitigation, tracking, and closure.
  • Support analysis of GMD system performance and architecture, including sensors, detection and tracking, ground systems, boosters, kill vehicles, and threats.
  • Develop and maintain functional and logical system architectures.
  • Create, review, and maintain Interface Control Documents (ICDs).
  • Support requirements development, management, allocation, and traceability.
  • Define system-level Tx/Rx requirements and interfaces supporting weapon communications.
  • Develop and manage system specifications and associated engineering documentation.
  • Manage and coordinate systems engineering artifacts, including system requirements, ICDs, Concepts of Operations (CONOPS), test plans, and verification artifacts.
  • Support system verification activities to ensure requirements and interfaces are properly addressed.
  • Collaborate with program offices, operational SMEs, government stakeholders, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Communicate technical findings, risks, recommendations, and engineering decisions through high-quality written and oral presentations.
Required Qualifications:
  • Experience in systems engineering, systems integration, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Experience with systems integration and interface definition.
  • Experience with risk management, including risk assessment, mitigation, tracking, and closure.
  • Understanding of GMD system performance and architecture, including sensors, detection/tracking, ground systems, boosters, kill vehicles, and threats.
  • Experience with Interface Control Documents (ICDs), functional and logical architecture development, and system specifications.
  • Experience creating and reviewing ICDs and maintaining requirements traceability.
  • Ability to define system-level Tx/Rx requirements and interfaces for weapon communications.
  • Experience managing system requirements, ICDs, CONOPS, test plans, and verification artifacts.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience interfacing with program offices, operational SMEs, and government stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ground-Based Midcourse Defense Systems Engineering and Integration experience.
  • Familiarity with telemetry and telecommand architecture.
  • Familiarity with ground-segment communications and test-range operations.
  • Demonstrated understanding of missile defense engagement processes.
  • Understanding of detection-to-decision timelines and associated system interactions.
  • Understanding of sensor-to-shooter data flows.
  • Knowledge of track discrimination and engagement assignment processes and algorithms.
  • Familiarity with interceptor guidance handoff processes.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary teams supporting complex weapon or missile defense systems.
