Job summary

Applied Materials is seeking a Systems Engineer in Benicia, CA to design, integrate, and optimize complex semiconductor systems. You will analyze requirements, define architectures, and ensure high-quality integration of subsystems while mitigating risks and maintaining reliability.

The role requires 4–7 years in the semiconductor industry and experience with metrology equipment (X-ray, optical, SEM, TEM). A MS/PhD in a related field is highly valued and relocation may be considered.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Define and design complex components, modules, and subsystems per market requirements.
• Coordinate with marketing and management to understand sub system needs.
• Lead architecture discussions and finalize subsystem architecture.
• Analyze sub systems for performance and reliability using engineering principles.
• Create architectural concepts and evaluate designs for best system solution.
• Build or source prototypes and test for conformance to specs.
• Troubleshoot engineering problems across disciplines.
• Support system integration during assembly and testing of new designs.
• Perform tests against reliability specs and adjust as needed.
• Contribute to projects spanning electrical, mechanical, physics, algorithms, and software.
• Provide remote and onsite support to field teams.

As a Systems Engineer, you’ll design, integrate, and optimize complex systems that drive the semiconductor industry forward. Your expertise in systems thinking and problem-solving is essential as you collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop advanced solutions to intricate processes and writing system specifications. You’ll be responsible for analyzing requirements, defining system architectures, conducting thorough testing, and ensuring seamless integration of subsystems. Additionally, you’ll identify and mitigate risks, confirming that our systems meet the highest quality standards and exceed customer expectations.

Role Responsibilities

• Complete definition and design of complex components, modules, and sub systems. Contribute to the system engineering specification both within the field of expertise and broaden into other disciplines. Ensure designs meet market requirement specifications (MRS).
• Coordinate with project marketing and management to understand sub system requirements.
• Lead architecture brainstorming meetings and drive the systems process to down select to a final architecture of a subsystem
• Conduct detailed engineering analysis of sub systems using vast knowledge of design concepts and functional requirements in field of technical expertise and broaden into other disciplines.
• Assist in creating concepts for architectural design approaches. Evaluate architectures to provide recommendation for best system solution approach
• Build and qualify prototypes of new designs, or procure entire subsystems from outsourced suppliers and test for compliance with detailed specifications
• Identify and troubleshoot a variety of difficult engineering problems in field of technical expertise, including serviceability and manufacturability.
• Support System Integration during the assembly and final testing of new product designs.
• Perform and coordinate tests against internal and industry-accepted reliability specifications. Make suitable design or operational changes as required.
• Support system engineering projects that have a substantial mix of electrical, mechanical, physics, algorithms and software design, and understand the underlying system implications.
• Provide remote and onsite support to field support personnel as required.
• 2-5 years of experience in the semiconductor industry, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience supporting, servicing, or operating metrology equipment, including X-ray, optical, SEM, or TEM systems.

Proven ability to perform product or system demonstrations in customer-facing, commercial, or technical sales environments.

Strong hands-on skills in optical microscopy and related characterization techniques.

The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on multiple factors including location, hire grade, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and with consideration of internal equity of our current team members. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation such as participation in a bonus and a stock award program, as applicable.

For all sales roles, the posted salary range is the Target Total Cash (TTC) range for the role, which is the sum of base salary and target bonus amount at 100% goal achievement.
