Job description

General Atomics (GA) and its affiliated companies are a leading global resource for high‑technology systems development in areas such as the nuclear fuel cycle, remotely piloted aircraft, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless, and laser technologies. GA‑EMS supplies advanced electromagnetic systems—including linear motors, superconducting and conventional rotating motors, power inverters, high‑energy capacitors, radiation monitoring systems, and high‑voltage DC power distribution systems—for government and commercial applications.

We have an exciting opportunity in our Aerospace Systems Engineering directorate for a full‑time Systems Analyst in Huntsville, AL. The role supports defense‑related development programs and products across multiple locations (Huntsville, AL; San Diego, CA; Fredericksburg, VA; and Centennial, CO) and requires collaboration with geographically distributed teams.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide systems‑analysis expertise to define and derive system and subsystem level requirements and performance predictions for new weapon systems such as tactical missiles, projectiles, and hypersonic vehicles during early development phases.
  • Support systems analysis for lasers, satellite systems, and other complex aerospace systems.
  • Lead trade studies and engineering‑analysis teams for small projects.
  • Offer adaptable support to the systems‑engineering organization, including direct program systems‑engineering support, proposal development, and internal development tasks.
  • Use analysis tools (MATLAB, Three and Six Degree‑of‑Freedom simulations, Python, etc.) to define system‑level budgets such as accuracy, latency, link margin, and power.
  • Use government‑owned simulation frameworks such as AFSIM to perform mission‑level analyses.
  • Perform analysis and decomposition of systems, segments, subsystems, and assemblies and their respective requirements.
  • Troubleshoot conflicting design/development requirements, difficult coordination requirements, and special material requirements.
  • Support multiple programs or integrated product teams through system analysis, assembly, integration, and testing.
  • Perform requirements verification using analysis methods.
  • Support program design reviews and make technical presentations.
  • Develop systems‑engineering documentation, artifacts, and contract deliverables under oversight from a Lead Systems Engineer, Chief Engineer, or Program Manager.
  • Interface with customers during program shaping, ConOps development, and requirements derivation activities.
  • Mentor and direct less experienced engineering staff.
  • Observe all laws, regulations, and applicable obligations throughout the business.
  • Work safely in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Work on a 9‑x‑80 schedule with every other Friday off.
Job Qualifications
  • Typically requires a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or Ph.D. in engineering or a related technical discipline and progressive engineering experience: six or more years with a bachelor’s, four or more with a master’s, or two or more with a Ph.D.
  • Comprehensive understanding of engineering concepts and principles, and ability to apply them to the development of cutting‑edge aerospace systems.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills; able to represent the organization as a prime technical contact and provide leadership to less experienced professionals.
  • Customer‑focused, capable of formulating plans based on innovative new designs and resolving advanced technical engineering problems.
  • Capable of working independently and in a team environment.
  • Sound understanding of tactical guided missiles, projectiles, hypersonic vehicles, lasers, or satellites and the engineering disciplines that support them.
  • Demonstrated experience with classical systems‑engineering methods and industry application of those methods.
  • Demonstrated experience or willingness to learn systems‑engineering tools such as DOORS, Jama, CORE, etc.
  • Experience with Model‑Based Systems Engineering and the Cameo/MagicDraw suite of tools highly desired.
  • Desire to teach and mentor other Systems Engineers and Systems Analysts.
  • Experience developing inputs to proposals, white papers, and RFIs desired.
  • INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) desired.
  • OMG‑Certified Systems Modeling Language (SysML) Professional (OCSMP) certifications desired.
  • Key abilities: Positive attitude, strong initiative, multitasking, delivering solid products efficiently, exceptional interpersonal, computer, and presentation skills, collaboration, independent task completion, rapid and effective problem solving.
  • Able to work extended hours and travel as required.
