Job description

Northwell Health, a leader in innovative healthcare, seeks a distinguished pathologist who will serve as Vice Chair of Laboratory Medicine as well as a proactive Medical Director for our Core Laboratory. Join us in shaping the future of diagnostic laboratory services at one of the largest health systems in the nation. This key leadership position involves recruitment and mentoring of faculty, strategic planning, operational oversight, and ensuring excellence in patient care through innovative laboratory practices. The ideal candidate will be a board‑certified pathologist with at least 10 years of progressive clinical and leadership experience.

The integrated service line for Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of Northwell Health is a 21‑hospital system with a centralized core laboratory and a microbiology core serving the greater New York metropolitan area as well as Health and Hospitals Corporation.

Northwell Health Labs, with its centralized core laboratory, a microbiology core, and over 60 hospital and outpatient locations, provides outstanding diagnostic care to our patients. Our pathologists and PhD scientists study the causes, processes and diagnosis of diseases, with laboratory services touching every department within the health system. Our experts perform more than 25 million tests per year, from general testing to specialized testing in complex microbiology, endocrinology, cytogenetics, molecular genetics, cytology, hematology, immunology, special coagulation, and transfusion medicine.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine service line has a mission to sub‑specialize anatomic pathology and laboratory medicine. In laboratory medicine, this includes 20 MD and PhD members in areas of microbiology, hematology, coagulation, clinical chemistry, flow cytometry, cytogenetics, point of care, informatics, and molecular genetic pathology. In addition, the community hospitals in the system that support rapid response laboratories are part of the integrated laboratory services. The department is home to Pathology Residency Training Programs for thirty‑two pathology residents (predominantly AP/CP track) and seven subspecialty fellowships. Academic appointments are at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra University.

Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute to enhancing the overall patient care experience through the integration of laboratory services.
  • Mentor and guide department faculty in professional growth and development.
  • Lead a team of skilled laboratory professionals, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration.
  • Assist the Chair with departmental management, strategic initiatives, and policy development.
  • Oversee all Core Lab operations to ensure high‑quality diagnostic services and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Implement new technologies and methodologies for efficient laboratory processes.
  • Collaborate with clinical teams to optimize laboratory resource utilization and enhance patient care.
  • Drive academic and research endeavors within the division; support scholarly activities among faculty and staff.
Qualifications
  • MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent degrees, with board certification in Clinical Pathology or both Clinical and Anatomic Pathology. Candidates with clinical experience in Clinical Chemistry and/or Molecular Pathology preferred.
  • Proven experience in laboratory leadership and management is essential.
  • Strong academic achievement and leadership track record in a hospital/academic setting or comparable commercial laboratory.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for effective team collaboration and patient interaction.
  • Commitment to advancing laboratory science through innovation and research.
