Job summary

Commonwealth Associates seeks an Electrical Power Engineer with 2–4 years of hands-on experience using PSS/E, PSCAD, PSLF and Milsoft. You will conduct dynamic stability, power flow, and contingency analyses, and contribute to protection relay settings development.

The ideal candidate holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical power with a master’s preferred, and will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on projects and proposals for clients.

Qualifications

  • Requires minimum bachelor’s degree; master’s preferred in electrical power.
  • Hands-on experience with industry software: PSS/E, PSCAD, PSLF, Milsoft.
  • Experience in power system studies: dynamic stability, power flow, contingency analysis, TRV, TOV, harmonics.

Responsibilities

  • Apply knowledge of design guides, standards, codes and Commonwealth Associates procedures to tasks.
  • Support Business Development with technical information for proposals or related activities.
  • Coordinate with client technical leads for data requests, site visits, and project reviews.
  • Collaborate with other disciplines to coordinate project details and tasks.
  • Collect, assimilate and manage data for engineering work.
  • Perform complex research and develop equipment/materials recommendations.
  • Prepare engineering deliverables such as contracts, project documents and studies.
  • Carry out engineering calculations following standard methods and principles.
  • Identify and resolve problems within assigned area or project.
  • Adhere to budget, schedule and quality requirements; assist in resource planning.
  • Support contract administration or project management duties as needed.
  • Develop scope of work packages for discipline projects.

Job description

The ideal candidate holds at least a bachelor’s degree in an electrical power discipline (master’s degree preferred) and brings 2–4 years of hands‑on experience using industry‑standard software such as PSS/E, PSCAD, PSLF, and Milsoft. You should have a solid track record in conducting power system studies—including dynamic stability, power flow, contingency analysis, and transient voltage assessments—as well as experience in power system protection and relay settings development.

Job Responsibilities
  • Knowledge and skills in departmental design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes, and Commonwealth Associates policies and procedures. Applies this knowledge to assigned tasks.
  • Support Business Development by providing technical information for sales proposals, or by pursuing other related activates as assigned by department managers.
  • Supports internal project teams and clients, regularly interacts with client's technical lead for data requests, site visits, clarification of project execution and review of comments.
  • Collaborates with other disciplines to identify and coordinate details of work for assigned tasks, or at project level for smaller‑scale projects.
  • Collects, assimilates, and manages data for engineering work.
  • Performs complex research and develops recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection.
  • Prepares a variety of engineering deliverables such as contract documents, project documents, and studies
  • Prepares complex engineering calculations following standard methods and principles.
  • Recognizes, defines, and seeks to resolve problems within assigned area or project.
  • Understands and adheres to budget, schedule, and quality requirements. Demonstrates understanding of project phases, schedules and schedule recovery as it pertains to engineering production and deliverables.
  • Provides input during planning of project resources and assists managers in resource planning activities.
  • Assists with contract administration or project management administrative duties in connection with project work as needed.
  • Assists in the development and production of project scope of work packages (scope, schedule & budget) for assigneddiscipline.
Qualifications:

Minimum bachelor’s degree - Masters degree preferred in electrical power discipline.

Experience with the following software:
  • PSS/E, PSS/E TS, TARA, PSLF, Milsoft
  • PSCAD, EMTP-RV
Experience with the following studies: 2- 4 years
  • Dynamic Stability Analysis, ISO model building in PSS/E and PSCAD, Power flow analysis, contingency analysis, Power Curve Analysis (PQ)
  • Transient Recovery Voltage (TRV) , Temporary Over Voltage (TOV), Transient Over Voltage (TOV), Harmonics, Effective Grounding, Black start
  • Experience in power system protection, relay settings development a plus.
