What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the System Engineer ¾ (Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 or 4) level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

System Engineer Level 3

System Engineer Level 3 ($128,000 - $215,900)

As a System Engineer with Engineering Services, you will serve as the owner's representative for engineering for your assigned facilities. You will interface with design teams, maintenance, and operations, shaping LANL's facilities and infrastructure to serve the needs of a growing and changing portfolio. The Level 3 role includes the following job opportunities:

  • Support WFO as a Pressure Safety Officer (PSO) or Electrical Safety Officer (ESO).
  • Conduct pressure safety calculations.
  • Thorough knowledge of ASME.
  • Provide control and maintenance of the technical baseline of the facility equipment.
  • Ensure that facility system configuration is managed effectively using a risk-based graded approach.
  • Follow the LANL Conduct of Engineering (CoE) Program in support of facility modifications and facility configuration management in accordance with the LANL Engineering Standards Manual (ESM), LANL Administrative Procedures (Aps), LANL Master Specifications, and related Codes and Standards.
  • Assist in defining maintenance requirements involving corrective maintenance and the tracking and trending of system performance.
  • Review design outputs for impact to technical baseline and master equipment lists.
  • Perform regular facility system walkdowns and Facility Health Reports.
  • Provide information for preventative maintenance schedule.
  • Mentor lower-level System Engineers.
  • Review IWDs.
  • Source of expert knowledge of assigned facilities.
  • Provide technical interface to existing facility systems and components.
  • Control and maintain the master equipment list (MEL) for assigned facilities.
  • Support configuration management.
System Engineer Level 4

System Engineer Level 4 ($153,600 - $266,500)

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in nuclear facility engineering processes, maintenance techniques, work planning and control development, Quality, Safety Basis and other Nuclear Facility safety management programs. Demonstrated experience working with industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the nuclear facility engineering discipline. Including Expert knowledge of nuclear facility engineering principles and procedures, guides, and administrative practices.
  • Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience in preparing and reviewing technical reports and studies as part of establishing and maintaining Technical Baseline for new and existing facility structural systems.
  • Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience in defining and collecting metrics on the usage, process, safety, and other parameters of interest for the structure, system, or components.
  • Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience in defining or establishing design or analysis tasks and prepare design concepts that meet both the regulatory and performance requirements for systems and equipment.
  • Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience in developing design details, design or analysis calculations, load studies, specifications, and special inspections that incorporate the applicable design requirements, including nuclear safety requirements, as applicable.
  • Extensive knowledge of and demonstrated technical experience in evaluating and trending system health.
  • Demonstrated ability to interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the customer during the development of the design as the Mechanical SME.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor engineering interns and other engineers.
What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated broad-based, engineering experience with projects or facilities involving design for new facilities and facility modifications.
  • Minimum 6 years working experience with engineering principles, codes, and standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor early career engineers.
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate engineering and maintenance concepts through various oral and written communication media, using a diverse range of technical and business acumen.

Additional Job Requirements for System Engineer 4:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Minimum 12 years of experience in engineering or facilities work.
  • Minimum of 12 years of experience in engineering work planning, budgeting, and design coordination.
  • Demonstrated broad and/or unique expert knowledge of engineering systems, applications of engineering methods, and application technology aided engineering tools to conventional and non-conventional facility and operations-based engineering problems.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 6 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired. Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 12 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired. Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.

Desired Qualifications
  • Mechanical/Electrical engineering degree and/or experience with facility systems is strongly preferred
  • Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam
  • Design or operations experience in nuclear, accelerator or industrial facility operations.
  • Experienced in producing designs utilizing AutoCAD and/or Revit tools and work processes.
  • Knowledge of DOE, LANL Engineering Standards, and Conduct of Engineering principles and procedures.
Work Location

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating the employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. This requirement applies only to U.S. citizens. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. Obtaining such clearance requires U.S. Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position at the higher level is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
