Job description

Currently seeking a Sr. System Engineer in San Diego, CA.

WCG is looking to hire a candidate with a broad experience in communications systems. We are a small business whose core service is supporting DoD programs in areas of communications and aerospace. Given a responsive but minimal corporate structure, a successful candidate will have the opportunity to perform with self-driven autonomy to meet system engineering objectives. The work will be generally performed in designated facilities, but it does offer partial remote work (25%). Additionally, the candidate will benefit from a 9/80 schedule, with every other Friday off. Some minimal travel may be required, with the opportunity to reduce or increase travel based on the candidate’s skill, experience, and willingness to learn.

At a high level, this position involves development, execution, and maintenance of a compliance test program for MUOS, a WCDMA-based satellite system. As a member of support staff to a DoD organization, a successful candidate will be part of a larger team developing and executing a certification test program, spanning technical, functional, and performance requirements.

This position will expect the candidate to become an expert on a vast quantity of information and eventually become the go-to Sr. System Engineer. This offers significant opportunity to grow in breadth of knowledge and experience, working with large organizations, third-party vendors, hands-on test equipment, live and test systems, security concepts, diagrams and models, configuration management, troubleshooting, and, at times, reverse-engineering.

Minimal Job Requirements:
  1. BS or BA degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, or related field.
  2. On-site (50-75% onsite, work in the lab), in San Diego, CA.
  3. Active SECRET DoD clearance or higher.
  4. 5+ years experience in a System Engineering or System Analyst position, with a focus on communications systems and protocols.
  5. Experience with cellular technology highly desired.

Position will involve some or all of the following:
  1. System engineering, causal models & diagrams (such as fishbone), development & breakdown of requirements, analysis of sequence and flow diagrams, Digital Engineering (DE), and Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE).
  2. Configuration management (CM) systems and tools, source-code and documentation control, version control such as SharePoint, Jira/Confluence, ClearCase, ClearQuest, DOORs, subversion, GIT, and custom solutions.
  3. Standards, specifications, APIs, internet protocols (ex: RFCs), Interface Control Documents (ICDs), design specifications and descriptions, flow and sequence diagrams, UML models, engineering memos, feature characterizations, step-by-step guides, training packages, dissection of complex systems into sub-components.
  4. Functional and requirements-based testing.
  5. Proficiency with MS Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio).
  6. Proficiency with MS Teams, Skype, or similar audio-video conferencing products, and good communication skills demonstrating the ability to work within local and remote teams.
  7. Configuration and operation of communications infrastructure and testing of WCDMA-based end-user equipment.
  8. Encryption and PKI concepts, key and certificate generation, management, and use.

Candidate with background in any of the following areas are sought:
  1. Embedded Systems (RTOS), including familiarity with components such as GPPs, DSPs, and FPGAs, IDEs and JTAG probes.
  2. Familiarity with 3G/4G/LTE/5G technologies, both user equipment and network. Experience can be substituted with any other circuit and packet switched telephony equipment for Analog, ISDN, T1/E1, digital communications, PBXs, VoIP, or similar infrastructure.
  3. Familiarity with Networking Equipment (Routers, Switches), and protocols (Ethernet/IP, ATM circuits/fiber, a plus). Proficiency with IPv4, routing, and subnetting. Knowledge of TCP/UDP and Multicast protocols.
  4. Experience with lab RF test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, signal generators, noise generators, protocol analyzers, data and impairment generators required.
  5. Experience with passive and active RF components (splitters/combiners, connector types, circulators, adapters, couplers, mixers, amplifiers and LNAs).
  6. General Programming and Scripting skills, including but not limited to Perl or Python, batch scripts, PowerShell, or similar. Job requires the ability to modify and utilize multiple computer environments (Windows and Linux), automating log analysis and file parsing.
