Job summary

This position serves as a Systems Command Center Technician on the evening shift for the Department of Innovation & Technology (DoIT) performing journey level enterprise system and network operations control work. In this role you will monitor, operate, and control systems and peripheral devices and environments to ensure appropriate availability and status resources. In addition, you will monitor various systems and contact on-call staff to resolve any unresolved issues, such as system and server failures. Essential Functions
  • Under general supervision, serves as a Systems Command Center Technician for the Department of Innovation & Technology (DoIT) performing journey-level enterprise system operations control work and computer control functions, including performing startups, shutdowns, system dumps (tasks, system, spool, etc.) and other functions for controlling a multi-processing computer environment.
  • Monitors mainframe systems and logs and responds to system issues to ensure appropriate availability of resources, including researching, resolving, and circumventing interruptions to processing components by following standard operational processes, procedures, and checklists.
  • Keeps abreast of new developments in the information technology field by continuing education through online training platforms, meetings, training sessions, seminars, and conferences to increase familiarity with and remain current on products, vendors, techniques, and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.
  • Requires one (1) year of related data processing experience.

Qualifying state employees in the employee Upward Mobility Program may complete combinations of specific proficiency tests and training programs leading to a certificate of proficiency in lieu of the stated requirements for this classification.

Preferred Qualifications
  • One (1) year of professional experience monitoring enterprise mainframe computer systems in a large-scale, multi-platform environment, including overseeing system performance, availability, and resource utilization by operating, monitoring, or controlling enterprise computer systems through automated tools, z/OS system commands, and menu-driven mainframe operations.
  • Working knowledge of mainframe operational system commands, including stops and restarts, system IPLs, and online commands using automated processes, in accordance with established procedures and checklists.
  • Ability to clearly document incidents, actions, and resolutions, to compile and maintain accurate shift logs and to update tickets to support audit and compliance requirements.
  • Ability to monitor, analyze, and resolve system errors and interruptions, by applying standard operating procedures, written check-list procedures, and contacting on-call techs.
  • Ability to analyze data logically and exercise sound judgement in defining and evaluating problems of an operational or procedural nature.
  • Ability to gain and maintain effective working relationships with associates, vendors, clients, and others.
  • Developed verbal and written communication skills to present technical information clearly and precisely to diverse audiences, including business users, development teams, and agency executives.

  • Requires the ability to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, short notice, evening, weekends, and holidays.
  • Requires the ability to attend seminars, conferences, and training to remain current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other industry related topics relevant to job duties.
  • Requires the ability to lift and carry objects or equipment weighing up to 20 pounds. This is considered light work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(b)). Light work involves lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds.
