The Systems Analyst assigned to systems administration supports the configuration, maintenance, security, monitoring, and reliable operation of District server and infrastructure technologies, with a primary emphasis on Windows-based systems and services. This position provides technical administration and troubleshooting for server environments and related enterprise technologies and works collaboratively with other Educational Technology Services (ETS) staff to maintain secure, reliable, and effective District technology services. Primary areas of responsibility include administration, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Windows Server environments; implementation and maintenance of system security practices; management of user, group, access, and related directory services; and support for enterprise systems and services dependent upon the District's server infrastructure. The position assists with identifying and mitigating system vulnerabilities, maintaining appropriate system configurations, applying updates and patches, monitoring system health and performance, and troubleshooting complex technical and operational issues. This position may also provide administration and technical support for Microsoft 365 services, including Exchange Online and related email services; Active Directory and identity-related services; DNS and DHCP; and virtualized server environments. Responsibilities include supporting network and firewall configurations as they relate to assigned systems, installing and maintaining SSL/TLS certificates, and assisting with the administration and troubleshooting of other infrastructure technologies and services. The position develops and maintains scripts and other automation, including the use of PowerShell, to improve system administration, monitoring, configuration, and operational efficiency. The position may also support Linux-based server environments and enterprise-grade physical server hardware and participate in the installation, configuration, maintenance, and lifecycle management of physical and virtual infrastructure. This position requires strong knowledge of Windows systems administration and an emphasis on security, reliability, documentation, and effective troubleshooting. Experience supporting Microsoft 365 and Exchange Online, Active Directory, virtualization technologies such as VMware or Proxmox, networking and firewall concepts, DNS and DHCP, PowerShell automation, SSL/TLS certificate management, Linux server environments, and enterprise server hardware is desirable and will support the breadth of systems and services assigned to the position. The Systems Analyst works collaboratively with networking, information security, enterprise systems, Help Desk, and other ETS personnel, as well as vendors and District stakeholders, to investigate issues, implement system improvements, document configurations and procedures, and support technology projects and operational needs.
Under general supervision, performs technical tasks related to the configuration, troubleshooting, maintenance, and monitoring of the District’s information technology infrastructure; configures and installs real-time monitoring tools and identifies and resolves systems problems; configures and monitors enterprise backup solutions; oversees data center environmental conditions; provides recommendations, support, and training to other information services support staff and District users in areas of responsibility; and performs related duties as assigned.
Receives general supervision from assigned ETS supervisor. Exercises technical direction and provides training to other staff.
This is the journey-level class in the Systems Analyst series responsible for performing complex technical assignments, projects, and analyses in support of District infrastructure. Responsibilities require the use of tact, discretion, and independent judgment and to have full and thorough knowledge of the concepts, practices, procedures, and policies of assigned function. This classification is distinguished from the Senior Systems Specialist by the complexity and size of the systems supported and the amount of discretion exercised over problems and resolutions, as well as the latter serves as a technical leader and subject matter expert in specific area(s).
Performs installation, configuration and reconfiguration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and upgrading of servers, mid-range computers, and related equipment; performs basic system administration functions.
Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer and to operate a motor vehicle to visit various District sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Standing in and walking between work areas is frequently required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, and reach to perform assigned duties, as well as push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift and carry materials and objects up to 50 pounds with the use of proper equipment and push and pull materials and objects up to 100 pounds with the use of proper equipment. Employees work in an office environment with moderate levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may come into contact with fumes, dust, and/or odors and may interact with upset staff when providing infrastructure support services.
