Orion Engineers + Constructors is seeking a Decontamination Technician for a temporary assignment at a chemical plant site. The role focuses on safe cleaning, decontamination, and equipment preparation under CLIENT work packages, with emphasis on safety and Process Safety Management.

The position supports site shutdowns, turnarounds, and coordination with operations, maintenance, and contractors, requiring familiarity with permits, confined spaces, hot work, and hazardous energy control.

Qualifications

• Experience in chemical plant or industrial environments preferred.
• Familiarity with permit-required work and equipment isolation.
• Ability to prepare JSAs for non-routine tasks.
• Strong attention to detail and safety compliance.
• Ability to read and interpret P&IDs.

Responsibilities

• Perform decontamination and cleaning per CLIENT work packages and site procedures.
• Support safe work permitting including hot work, confined space, and elevated work.
• Develop Job Safety Analyses for non-routine tasks.
• Read P&IDs to locate equipment and understand process flow.
• Open piping and equipment using hand and power tools as directed.
• Assist with hazardous energy control (lockout/tagout) and safeguards.
• Coordinate with maintenance contractors during complex tasks.
• Operate forklifts or manlifts if qualified.
• Maintain housekeeping and contamination control.
• May assist with additional client-directed duties.

Decontamination Technician ( Temporary Assignment - Synthesis Unit)

Job Summary
The Decontamination Technician supports the safe cleaning, decontamination, and preparation of process equipment, piping, and related systems in an active chemical plant environment. This temporary assignment is performed under site-specific procedures and CLIENT-issued work packages, with a strong emphasis on safety, hazardous energy control, and compliance with Process Safety Management requirements. The role may also support unit decommissioning, shutdown, or turnaround activities by assisting operations and maintenance teams with equipment opening, specialty cleaning, and contractor coordination.

Essential Functions

• Perform decontamination and cleaning activities in accordance with CLIENT-provided work packages and site procedures.
• Support safe work permitting, including hot work, confined space, elevated work, and other non-routine task permits.
• Develop Job Safety Analyses for non-routine work activities and ensure hazards are identified before work begins.
• Read and follow P&IDs to locate equipment, trace piping, and understand process flow paths.
• Open piping, equipment, and systems using hand tools and power tools as directed by the work package.
• Support control of hazardous energy, including chemical, mechanical, and electrical sources, through lockout/tagout and related safeguards.
• Oversee or support specialty cleaning activities such as hydro blasting when required by the scope of work.
• Coordinate with maintenance contractors during more complex equipment openings and cleaning tasks.
• Operate mobile equipment such as forklifts and manlifts as qualified and authorized.
• Maintain a strong focus on housekeeping, contamination control, and safe work execution throughout the assignment.
• May include additional assignments directed by the client representative.

Skills, Knowledge & Qualifications

• Chemical plant or industrial operating experience preferred.
• Working knowledge of OSHA PSM environments and safe work practices.
• Ability to issue or support safe work permits in an industrial setting.
• Experience with hazardous energy control and isolation methods.
• Ability to prepare JSAs for non-routine work.
• Understanding of elevated work, hot work, and confined space entry processes.
• Ability to read and interpret P&IDs.
• Mechanical aptitude and ability to use hand tools and power tools safely.
• Ability to communicate effectively with operators, maintenance personnel, safety staff, and contractors.
• Strong attention to detail, situational awareness, and commitment to compliance.
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Prior chemical plant, refinery, or heavy industrial experience preferred.
• Experience working in an OSHA 1910.119 PSM environment preferred.
• Experience with permit-required work, equipment isolation, and field verification preferred.
• Mobile equipment license or certification for forklifts and manlifts preferred.
• Ability to work in physically demanding conditions, including exposure to chemicals, noise, heat, and outdoor weather.
• Ability to work at client sites without sponsorship and comply with all site access, safety, and security requirements
• Valid driver's license with driving record meeting company standards and TWIC eligibility
• Ability to pass background checks, pre-employment drug/alcohol screening, and ongoing/random testing per company and client policies

• This position may require standing, climbing, bending, lifting, and working in tight or elevated spaces. The work environment may include exposure to chemicals, confined spaces, high-pressure cleaning equipment, and active industrial operations. Extended hours, shift work, or weekend work may be required based on project needs.
• Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift.
• Must be able to climb stairs, ladders, and elevated platforms as needed.
• Must be able to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach frequently.
• Must be able to work in confined spaces, tight clearances, and other restricted-access areas.
• Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull tools, equipment, and supplies, typically up to 50 pounds, and more with assistance when required.
• Must be able to use hand tools and power tools safely and effectively.
• Must be able to operate mobile equipment such as forklifts and manlifts if qualified.
• Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment, including hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, respirators, and chemical-resistant clothing as needed.
• Must be able to tolerate exposure to heat, humidity, noise, dust, odors, chemicals, and outdoor weather conditions.
• Must be able to respond quickly to changing field conditions and follow directions in a dynamic industrial environment.
• Must have sufficient vision, hearing, and communication ability to work safely around equipment, personnel, and process systems.
• Must be able to perform repetitive physical tasks and maintain focus on safety throughout the assignment.
