Sylvan Learning: Tutor (In Center)

JOB TITLE: Center Tutor

STARTING PAY RANGE: $20-$23/Hour, based on experience and qualifications

POSITION SUMMARY

The SCL Center Tutor is responsible for creating a positive, personal learning experience for each student by delivering instruction using Sylvan program materials. The Center Tutor manages time, tasks, and student engagement to create balanced and effective sessions, evaluates student progress, and communicates outcomes to the Education Team. This role is a key part of the instructional foundation at SCL and is the primary face of learning for our students.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Prepares for each instructional session; gathers and organizes materials as appropriate.
  • Greets students and initiates instruction to personally engage each student from the start of each session.
  • Delivers instruction according to the design of Sylvan program materials.
  • Manages students, tasks, and time to create a balanced and productive instructional session.
  • Evaluates and records student progress on each program assignment.
  • Uses praise and encouragement to ensure students remain engaged and motivated.
  • Motivates students using Sylvan tokens in accordance with instructional management standards; tracks and records tokens earned.
  • Manages the conclusion of each session, including completion of learning logs and transition activities; supports procedures to ensure student safety and well-being.
  • Communicates specific student needs and progress to the Education Team.
  • Attends staff meetings and completes ongoing training as required.
  • Completes certification training on each Sylvan program taught.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Competency in Math and/or English Language Arts, assessed as part of the hiring process.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Four year degree.
  • Prior teaching or tutoring experience.
  • State teaching credential, current or expired.
  • Comfort with tablet computers and digital learning platforms.

  • Proven ability to engage, motivate, and inspire students to learn.
  • Strong interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Flexible and self-sufficient; takes ownership of responsibilities without close supervision.
  • Collaborative team player; able to take direction from multiple members of center leadership.
SCHEDULE AND WORK LOCATION

This is a part-time, in-person learning-center position. Work schedules are based on student enrollment and center needs and may include weekday afternoons/evenings and weekends.

WORK ENVIRONMENT / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS

This position operates in an active learning-center environment and requires frequent interaction with students and coworkers. To perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, the employee must be able to:

  • Access, read, comprehend, and use printed and digital instructional materials, student records, lesson plans, learning logs, and other information necessary to provide instruction.
  • Accurately enter, retrieve, review, and record student progress and instructional information using tablets, computers, and Company systems.
  • Communicate effectively with students and coworkers and understand and respond appropriately to communications necessary for instruction and student supervision.
  • Simultaneously monitor, engage, and provide instruction to multiple students during instructional sessions.
  • Maintain awareness of the instructional environment and respond appropriately to student needs, behavior, and potential safety concerns.
  • Navigate the learning-center environment and access instructional materials, equipment, and student work areas.
  • Handle and organize instructional materials and operate tablets, computers, and other equipment used in the position.
  • Sustain the attention and engagement necessary to provide instruction and supervise students throughout scheduled instructional sessions.
