Job description

JOB PURPOSE

The Swiss Prototype Machinist is responsible for producing custom and/or modifying existing medical instruments and implants from start to finish as an integral member of the Product Development team for use in spine surgery. The Swiss Prototype Machinist provides faster manufacture and fabrication times than outside suppliers are able to in order to help accelerate the company’s responsiveness to its customers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Manufactures and fabricates custom implants and instruments utilizing ESPRIT programming or equivalent on multi-channel Swiss type CNC lathes to produce machined components in a reasonable amount of time with no quality issues.
  • Assists in coordinating outside operations with engineers and inspecting components and assemblies.
  • Provides material, design and manufacturability feedback to the Product Development Engineers.
  • Fabricates and manufactures other components as needed to support company objectives.
  • Maintains the Specials/Machine shop and equipment to a high standard by performing basic cleaning and maintenance.
  • Complies with all Orthofix Standard Operating Procedures and Work Instructions including those mandated by the FDA.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Proficiency in CNC Multi-Channel Mill+Turn or Swiss Programming (ESPRIT Experience Preferred).
  • Setup and Operation of Multi-Channel Swiss Type CNC Lathe.
  • Develops processes required for implant and instrument manufacturing and fabrication including identifying all operations, fixturing and associated tooling.
  • Program machines in the most practical and efficient way possible.
  • Ability to manufacture or fabricate implants and instruments using all Prototype Shop machine tools as needed or the ability to learn in a reasonable timeframe.
  • Ability to assemble manufactured and fabricated components as needed.
  • Ability to hold close tolerances and inspect manufactured and fabricated components including assemblies.
  • Effectively communicate material, design and manufacturability feedback to Product Development Engineers.
  • Read and understand engineering drawings including the understanding of GD&T principles.
  • Demonstrate good housekeeping skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • ESPRIT Multi-Channel Swiss Lathe Programming.
  • Tsugami Swiss Type CNC Lathe.
  • Deep Hole Drilling.
  • Prior Medical Device experience.
  • Additional experience, skills, knowledge and/or abilities: Hurco Mill and Lathe Programming, Mastercam Programming, Trumpf Laser Marker, FANUC Wire EDM.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / ADVERSE WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Ability to stand as needed during the setup and running of parts.
  • Ability to pick up, push, pull and handle the minimum of 40 lbs independently.
  • Must be able to program at a computer, program at a machine, perform machine set‑ups and operate the machines.
  • Visual performance essential for job duties, safety glasses required, need to endure machining noise up to 90 decibels.
  • Need to maintain alertness during the setup and operation of machine tools.
  • Eyesight and hearing must be correctable to a standard level.
  • This position requires frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • This position requires frequent standing.
  • This position requires frequent moderate lifting of 15-40 lbs.
  • This position requires frequent exposure to dust, fumes, gases, odors, or other airborne irritants.
  • This position requires frequent exposure to chemicals and/or solvents.
  • This position requires frequent exposure to high air temperatures, radiant heat sources (sunlight, hot exhaust, etc.) or direct physical contact with hot objects (welding operations, etc.).
