Swine Production Trainee in the U.S.
Job Description
This is a hands-on role in a working swine production environment. Candidates should be prepared for:
Dust: barn environments can be dusty at times, particularly during feeding and animal movement.
Odors: swine facilities have strong, distinctive odors that take time to get used to.
Large animals: daily work involves close contact with large animals, some weighing over 400 lb, which requires physical stamina, alertness, and safe animal-handling practices.
- Facilitate and drive the entire swine breeding life cycle.
- Perform phenotypical evaluations of potential breeding stock to ensure animals meet the physical requirements to qualify as breeding animals, including evaluating each animal’s leg structure and weight and recording animal identities in a tracking system.
- Evaluate and sort animals based on physical requirements, nutritional status, and health status to ensure those selected to become breeding animals meet the health qualifications for breeding livestock, including euthanizing and disposing of animals when necessary, in compliance with federal and state regulations.
- Assist nutritionists with on-site evaluations and communication of age-targeted nutritional performance to ensure all animals consistently receive proper nutrition for growth and development. This includes identifying site-specific nutritional needs and applying best practices to increase production efficiency and improve animal quality.
- Manage the administration of preventive medications and vaccines and implement improved practices for parasite and disease control.
- Evaluate livestock feed to ensure optimal nutrition for the specific ages and types of animals being fed.
- Evaluate livestock facilities to ensure appropriate safety, temperature, airflow, and other environmental conditions.
- Feed all animals according to nutritional requirements and nutritional values based on age, weight, and sex, and ensure feed and water systems are functioning properly.
- Work safely while performing all job duties.
- Ensure the barn’s biosecurity protocols are followed by all staff and visitors.
- Perform other farm duties as required.
Requirements
- Eligible for U.S. work authorization (visa approval required).
- Willing to follow all company biosecurity protocols.
- Mexican, Canadian, or U.S. citizen.
- Degree in Animal Science, Agronomy, or a related field.
- Professional License (Cédula Profesional) in hand (Engineering related field).
- U.S., Mexican or Canadian passport
