Overview

eGenesis is a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing human-compatible engineered organs to address the global organ shortage. The company’s genome engineering platform enables multiplex gene edits to remove biological barriers, add protective human transgenes, and inactivate endogenous retroviruses. EGEN-2784, a genetically engineered porcine kidney, is the lead program currently evaluated in a multi-patient Expanded Access study at MGH. eGenesis is headquartered in Cambridge, MA.

Position Summary

The Neonatal Care Technician will be responsible for animal care, cleaning, and communication between neonatal and veterinary staff. The individual should be reliable, timely, and observant, able to efficiently perform all required procedures overseen by the neonatal supervisor. All team members must abide by eGenesis policies and procedures relevant to this position.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily care of piglets in the eGenesis Neonatal facility, including daily weights and temperatures, cleaning, feeding according to SOPs, observing piglets and recording clinical observations, and providing recommended treatments under veterinary instruction (including emergency care and assisting in procedures such as sedation/anesthesia, venipuncture, and euthanasia).
• Record all information in the dedicated databases.
• Interpret and report piglet health status and medical history, communicating piglet clinical signs with the supervisor and veterinary staff.
• Participate in department, division, and other meetings as requested.
• Ensure SOP compliance by completing training, monitoring for deviations, and informing the team and supervisor when deviations are observed.
• Promote and adhere to safety in the workplace, including safety awareness, addressing unsafe acts, maintaining equipment, and completing required training and paperwork.
• Ensure compliance with company biosecurity practices to safeguard the health of neonatal animals.
• Promote and adhere to eGenesis animal welfare policies in line with applicable regulatory requirements (USDA, FDA, OLAW) and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the Animal Welfare Act.
• This position requires occasional overnight and weekend shifts on a rotating basis, with comp time to accommodate schedule changes. As essential personnel, limited on-call or emergency response availability may occasionally be required.

Basic Qualifications

• Experience with animal handling and basic animal health concerns; knowledge of equipment disinfection and infection control practices.
• Eagerness to learn or further knowledge relating to animal health.
• Attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Proficiency in MS Office; schedule flexibility.
• AALAS certification (preferred).
• 1+ years of relevant experience in animal research or veterinary care (preferred).
• Knowledge and expertise in veterinary procedures (preferred).
• Knowledge and expertise in animal research (preferred).

Physical Demands

• Able to handle piglets ranging from 1 to 50 kilograms.
• Able to stand and perform cleaning tasks.
• Must wear personal protective equipment (PPE).

Work Environment

This position operates in multiple environments including office environments (documentation), laboratory environments (sample collections with veterinary staff), and farm environments (potential exposure to hazardous chemicals, cleaning fecal matter, and dusty conditions).
