Job summary

Ymcaokc is seeking an Aquatics Coordinator to lead swim lessons and supervise staff, ensuring a safe, welcoming pool environment. Training is provided, and you’ll work closely with the Director to meet department goals.

You’ll manage class schedules, coordinate private lessons, handle refunds, and help with marketing of the swim program while supervising lifeguards and instructors.

Qualifications

• Must be CPR, AED, O2, and First Aid certified (training provided).
• 21+ years old with swimming instruction and lifeguard supervisory skills.
• 1 year of supervisory experience required.
• Ability to communicate with diverse ages and participants.
• YMCA Lifeguard Certification or equivalent, with instructor swimming certifications.

Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise swim lessons and aquatics program.
• Coordinate scheduling and administration via Daxko system.
• Hire, train, and supervise swim instructors; create staff schedules.
• Promote safety and maintain equipment/facilities within the aquatics area.
• Assist in marketing and scheduling swim lessons; report to Director.
• Attend staff meetings and maintain timely reports.

Everyone knows the pool is the coolest place to be. Join our Aquatics Team to make sure everyone can enjoy the pool in a safe and welcoming environment. Whether you’re a lifeguard, a swim instructor, or a little bit of both, you’re going to love working in aquatics at the Y because you’re helping swimmers feel confident and gain experience in the water. No lifeguard experience? No problem, we’ll train you!

* Starting at $14.00 per hour

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

To provide leadership within the Aquatic Program and to coordinate and supervise swim lessons under the principles of the Y Character Development; caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Must possess a cooperative spirit committed to the Mission and Values of the Y.
• Ability to relate to aquatic staff, other Y staff and members and program participants.
• Will closely work with their Director to achieve the program goals of the department.
• Will be responsible for program set up and administration through the Daxko operating system.
• Will be responsible for all private swim lesson requests.
• Will be responsible for refund requests and class change requests.
• Will be assigned schedules of guarding and instruction by the Director.
• Must be mentally alert to dangerous situations in order to assure the safety of all participants.
• Physical ability to use both legs and arms to properly use aquatic equipment to rescue a 200-pound person.
• Physically able to see, hear and project the voice across distances.
• Able to move to various locations, including in and around the swimming pool and sit in an elevated guard station.
• Ability to handle irate, complaining or demanding individuals without internalizing or personalizing comments made.
• Remain physically able to demonstrate skills.
• Assist in hiring, training and supervision of swim instructor staff.
• Will create work schedules for all swim instructors.
• Must teach aquatic classes and private swim lessons as needed and maintain direct contact with members and program participants.
• Must promote safety within the aquatics department assuring equipment and facility is maintained and staff is assigned.
• Will be a contact person when instructors or guards fail to show for assigned shifts.
• Will assist in marketing and scheduling of the swim lesson program.
• Attendance at staff meeting is required.
• All reports will be kept current and turned into the Director as scheduled.
• Must work a variety of schedules including evenings and weekends.
• Develop meaningful and sustainable relationships with members, donors and volunteers.

EFFECT ON END RESULTS:

This position directly affects the overall Aquatic Department. When done properly, the Program will have a positive and safe atmosphere for each participant.

Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Must be certified in CPR, AED, O2, and First Aid. (Training provided by the Y, if needed)
• Must be 21 years of age or older and show technical skills in swimming instruction, lifeguarding and skills in supervision of others.
• One year of previous supervisory experience is required.
• Must have personal characteristics consistent with the Y Character Development Values.
• Must be able to communicate with a variety of ages.
• YMCA Lifeguard Certification (or from another nationally recognized certifying organization) or have the ability to obtain certification upon employment. Should also possess Instructor certifications in swimming.
• Will acquire CPO certification within three months of employment and receive additional YMCA aquatic certifications as trainings become available.
