Job summary

The YMCA of South Hampton Roads is seeking a qualified Swim Lesson Instructor to lead classes, teach water safety, and inspire confidence in students. You will deliver lessons, maintain safety standards, and connect with families to support the YMCA's mission.

This role requires current YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification, BLS/First Aid, and the ability to work with children in a busy aquatic setting.

Qualifications

• Must hold current YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification.
• ASHI BLS, Basic First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certifications or equivalent.
• Must demonstrate swim instructor skills per YMCA standards.
• At least 16 years old.

Responsibilities

• Instruct swimming lessons per YMCA guidelines using prepared lesson plans.
• Build authentic relationships with students and parents; encourage involvement and volunteers.
• Provide information on aquatics programs and schedules; refer to other programs when needed.
• Complete staff orientation and required safety trainings.
• Maintain attendance records and progress reports.
• Attend staff meetings and trainings; follow policies and safety procedures.
• Ensure equipment is organized and report damages.
• Support COVID-19 safety and cleanliness expectations.
• Assist in other tasks as assigned by supervisor.

Position Summary

The Y is a leading nonprofit for strengthening community, and the nation’s lead provider of swim lessons to increase skill and safety in and around water. This position provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swimming classes.

Essential Functions

• Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, using prepared lesson plans accordingly
• Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers
• Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate, refers students and parents to other programs
• Completes new staff orientation training as required, including bloodborne pathogens and child abuse prevention
• Maintains records as required (i.e., attendance, progress reports, etc.)
• Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled
• Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, best practices, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary
• Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment
• Performs and adheres to safety, cleanliness, and uniform standards associated with COVID-19 prevention
• Assists in all areas and completes all projects and assignments as assigned by supervisor

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

• Current YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification. If associate is Red Cross WSI certified he or she must crossover to YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor within 180 days of employment
• Current ASHI BLS, Basic First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certification (or equivalent course from American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or National Safety Council). Any BLS certification is only good for one year
• Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards
• At least 16 years of age

Working Conditions And Physical Requirements

This position operates in an aquatic, recreational, and community-based environment and regularly interacts with participants, children, families, team members, leaders, and other stakeholders. The role requires the ability to instruct and observe participants while demonstrating proper swimming and stroke techniques. The employee must be able to stand for prolonged periods, lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, and lift or assist a small to average-sized child as needed. The position requires the physical ability to safely demonstrate aquatic skills and perform the essential functions associated with teaching swim lessons. Work may be performed indoors or outdoors and may involve exposure to humidity, heat, cold, and inclement weather conditions. The role also requires the ability to maintain attention and communicate effectively in a loud and active aquatic environment.

Compensation & Benefits

Wage Range: $17 .00 hourly

The wage range provided reflects the YMCA of South Hampton Roads’ good-faith determination of the minimum and maximum starting salary for this position.
