Position Summary

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Swim Instructor maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides proper, safe instruction of all levels of the Y USA swim lessons.

Essential Functions
  • Instruct swimming lessons as assigned in accordance with YMCA guidelines, following lesson plans provided for each class level.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with program participants and parents/caregivers while supporting them in achieving their goals.
  • Relay information regarding participants' progress as well as other programs to parents/caregivers, when appropriate, while maintaining a friendly and warm atmosphere.
  • Maintain records as required (e.g., attendance, parent handbooks, certificates).
  • Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Complete incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Attend staff meetings and in‑service trainings when requested.

Qualifications
Swim Instructor I
  • Must have or obtain CPR Pro and First Aid certification.

  • Obtain Mandated Reporter Clearance.
Swim Instructor II
  • Must have or obtain CPR Pro and First Aid certification.
  • Obtain a state police clearance, a child abuse clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.
  • Obtain Mandated Reporter Clearance.
  • High School Diploma.
  • 3 years teaching swim lessons experience or completion of YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor (YSLI) Training.
Swim Instructor III
  • Must have or obtain CPR Pro and First Aid certification.
  • Obtain a state police clearance, a child abuse clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.
  • Obtain Mandated Reporter Clearance.
  • High School Diploma.
  • Meet all requirements for Level II.
  • 5 years of experience teaching swim lessons.
  • 3 years of experience supervising a staff team.
