Position Summary
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Swim Instructor maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides proper, safe instruction of all levels of the Y USA swim lessons.
Essential Functions
- Instruct swimming lessons as assigned in accordance with YMCA guidelines, following lesson plans provided for each class level.
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with program participants and parents/caregivers while supporting them in achieving their goals.
- Relay information regarding participants' progress as well as other programs to parents/caregivers, when appropriate, while maintaining a friendly and warm atmosphere.
- Maintain records as required (e.g., attendance, parent handbooks, certificates).
- Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Complete incident and accident reports as necessary.

Qualifications
Swim Instructor I
- Must have or obtain CPR Pro and First Aid certification.
- Obtain a state police clearance, a child abuse clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.
- Obtain Mandated Reporter Clearance.
Swim Instructor II
- Must have or obtain CPR Pro and First Aid certification.
- Obtain a state police clearance, a child abuse clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.
- Obtain Mandated Reporter Clearance.
- High School Diploma.
- 3 years teaching swim lessons experience or completion of YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor (YSLI) Training.
Swim Instructor III
- Must have or obtain CPR Pro and First Aid certification.
- Obtain a state police clearance, a child abuse clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.
- Obtain Mandated Reporter Clearance.
- High School Diploma.
- Meet all requirements for Level II.
- 5 years of experience teaching swim lessons.
- 3 years of experience supervising a staff team.

- Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
- Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
