SWIM INSTRUCTOR & LIFEGUARD - SUMMER CAMP

Swim Instructor and Lifeguard - Summer Camp Opportunity

Camp Olmsted, located in Cornwall on Hudson, New York, has been a cherished summer destination for campers aged 6 to 14 from New York City communities for over 120 years. Our wide range of activities, including swimming, ropes challenge courses, arts and crafts, kiddie’s kitchen, dance, theater, and sports, provide a dynamic and enriching experience for our campers.

We are currently seeking dedicated individuals to join our team as a Swim Instructor & Lifeguard/ Camp Counselor for the upcoming summer program. This is an incredible opportunity to make a positive impact on children's lives while enjoying a rewarding and memorable summer experience.

Dates:

Leadership Week (Supervisory Staff Only): June 15 - June 19, 2026

Camp Dates: June 29 - August 7, 2026

General Responsibilities:
  • Maintains order and safety in swimming areas and assists in enforcing pool policies.
  • Ensures and provides a safe, healthy & clean pool environment at all times.
  • Consistent and vigilant monitoring of the pool is required.
  • Responds quickly, efficiently, and professionally to any emergency.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of all pool rules and regulations and can enforce these regulations.
  • Prepares aquatic instructional equipment before classes begin and puts it away when lessons have ended.
  • Provides corrective and positive feedback to campers to foster a positive learning atmosphere.
  • Provides specific directions for swim aides and develops their knowledge, skills, and capability for swim instruction.
  • Provides swim instruction to students of all ages, abilities, and skill levels.
  • May work in other areas of the camp during inclement weather and hours when the pool is closed.
  • Care for a group of campers, living with them in the cabins.
  • Supervise campers throughout the day and evening.
  • Escort campers to various activities.
  • Lead activities as assigned.
  • Share meals and provide nighttime care for campers.
Qualifications (REQUIRED):
  • Must be 18+ years of age and possess a current Lifeguard / First Aid / CPR / AED (within current 12 months)
  • Must be able to work and reside on our camp facility through August 7th.
  • Swim instructors must be in good physical and mental condition to provide lifesaving services.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and respond calmly to high-pressure emergency situations.
  • Ability to lift/move, set up, and store equipment and children weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Genuine interest in working with children.
  • Fun‑spirited and patient.

Please note that all candidates must be willing and able to live on the camp premises for the entire seven weeks of the program, including the orientation period.
