Job summary

Greater Austin YMCA is seeking a part-time Swim Instructor to teach and supervise swim lessons in a busy pool environment. You will help participants build confidence, develop strong water skills, and foster a love for swimming while upholding safety rules.

You will work 15–28 hours weekly, arrive early for class transitions, document progress, and participate in trainings. Certifications in First Aid, CPR/AED, and Emergency Oxygen are required; YMCA or ARC WSI preferred.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Excellent swimming skills with ability to teach various techniques.
  • Calm and composed in high-pressure situations.
  • Current First Aid, CPR/AED, and Emergency Oxygen certifications.
  • YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor or ARC Water Safety Instructor certifications preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively monitor pool areas and enforce safety rules.
  • Connect with participants and families, offering feedback and encouragement.
  • Arrive early, ready to teach, and manage class transitions.
  • Never leave the pool unattended; actively engage with swimmers.
  • Maintain attendance, progress, and evaluations for improvement.
  • Inform members about pool rules and safety procedures.
  • Provide first aid as needed and document incidents.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in the pool area and locker rooms.
  • Attend trainings and staff meetings to stay updated on safety procedures.
  • Demonstrate YMCA values in all interactions and foster belonging.
