Job summary

YMCA of Greater Waukesha County is seeking a part-time Swim Instructor to lead swimming classes at Tri County YMCA in Menomonee Falls, WI. You will create a welcoming, safe environment and promote YMCA values while delivering instruction and tracking progress.

The role requires passing an advanced swimming test, valid First-Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and the ability to communicate with members and parents. Applicants aged 15 may qualify with lifeguard certification.

Qualifications

• Must pass an advanced swimming test.
• Must have a current state approved First-Aid certification and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.
• Ability to exercise mature judgment and ensure safety of participants.
• Must communicate YMCA program information to members/participants.
• Must be observant and safety conscious.
• Minimum age 15 with lifeguard certification if applicant is 15.

Responsibilities

Job description

Job Location: Tri County YMCA - Menomonee Falls, WI 53051, Position Type: Part Time, Salary Range: $16.00 - $17.00 Hourly

GENERAL FUNCTIONS:

Under the direction of the Aquatic Director and in accordance with Association policies, the Swim Instructor will provide direct leadership, instruction, motivation, and a safe environment for students in swimming classes. The Swim Instructor should also act as a liaison and champion for the YMCA’s core values.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Create an environment that is welcoming, nurturing and genuine for all members and guests.
• Exercise mature judgment and strong decision making, especially as it relates to safety.
• Develop rapport and maintain meaningful relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
• Able to work with other staff as part of a team.
• Conduct swim classes in accordance with Y of the USAs Swimming Lesson Program in an enthusiastic and exciting way while maximizing swimmer participation in every class period.
• Motivate others in the areas of self-awareness and self-confidence through swimming and aquatics.
• Complete and turn in all class paperwork as required by supervisor.
• Communicate student progress to participants and/or their parents throughout the session.
• Maintain a positive and responsible attitude and demeanor at all times.
• Participation and satisfactory completion of in-service trainings is mandatory.
• Uphold the core values of the YMCA when interacting with people within the YMCA facilities and within the community.
• Work scheduled shifts including weekend shifts. Arrangements for substitutes must be previously approved by the Aquatics Director.
• Must be able to understand the way children learn at various ages and relate to them in a fun-loving, engaging, and captivating way.

Qualifications: EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Must take and pass an advanced swimming test.
• Must have a current state approved First-Aid certification and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.
• Ability to exercise mature judgment and sound decision making, ensure safety of participants, and relate to people in a positive, but firm manner.
• Must be able to effectively communicate information on YMCA programs to members and participants.
• Must be observant and safety conscious.
• Minimum age for this position is 15 years. A requirement for applicants aged 15 (only) is lifeguard certification for this position.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to teach in hot, humid environments. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50lbs and have full range of body movement.
