Job summary

YMCA of the Inland Northwest is seeking a part-time Swim Instructor at the Central Branch in Spokane, WA. The role teaches swim lessons in line with YMCA policies and supports youth development, healthy living, and community well-being.

The instructor plans lessons, monitors progress, enforces safety, and manages up to ten participants. Training, staff meetings, and flexible scheduling are provided as part of a mission-driven organization.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 15 years old.
  • Strong communication and listening skills.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups.
  • Completion of YMCA required training upon hire.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and teach swim instruction to participants, offering activities by swimmer level.
  • Maintain equipment inventory by storing and issuing swim gear.
  • Evaluate abilities and adapt movements to accommodate participants.
  • Explain and enforce safety rules for the aquatic facility.
  • Monitor progress and provide feedback to participants and families.
  • Track attendance for group lessons (up to ten participants).
  • Follow safety, emergency, and child abuse prevention policies.
  • Attend staff meetings and in-service trainings.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Swim Instructor teaches swim lessons in accordance with YMCA policies and Y-USA instructor training. The Swim Instructor builds relationships with swim lesson participants in beginner, intermediate, and advanced swim lesson sessions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Plan and teach swim instruction to Y swim lesson participants, offering a variety of program activities depending on swimmer ability and swimming level.
  • Maintain equipment inventory by selecting, storing, and issuing swim lesson equipment as needed.
  • Evaluate individuals’ abilities, needs, and physical conditions, offering alternative movements and activities to accommodate and keep the class enjoyable.
  • Explain and enforce safety rules and regulations about the Aquatic facility and swim lesson equipment to swim lesson participants.
  • Monitor participant progress and administer feedback to swim lesson participants and/or families, through conversation and written materials.
  • Track attendance of participants and manage group lessons of up to ten participants.
  • Knows, reviews, and applies all safety, emergency, and child abuse prevention policies and procedures, responding to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA protocol.
  • Attends all staff meetings and Inservice training to maintain skills, build connections with staff, and exchange ideas with others.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • At least 15 years of age
  • Exhibits great communication and listening skills to work with staff and members, delivering a quality experience
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economicsegments of the community.
  • Completion of YMCA required training upon hire.
  • Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to demonstrate swimming and water safety skills in accordance with YMCA standards and maintain certification-levels of physical and mental readiness.
  • The employee must assist swimmers of various body weights in water.
  • The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and move around on the pool deck and in the pools to assist patrons of all ages in the pools.
  • The employee is frequently required to utilize oral and listening comprehension and expression to teach swim lesson participants, observe distress signals in the Aquatics Environment, and enforce safety regulations.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

STARTING PAY:

$17.63/hr
