Job summary

The City of Greeley is seeking a Water Safety Instructor responsible for instructing and ensuring the safety of swim lesson participants. The role requires availability during early mornings, days, evenings, and weekends.

Key qualifications include at least 15 years of age, current CPR and First Aid certifications, and preferably, a Water Safety Instructor Certification. The instructor will demonstrate various swimming strokes and maintain a positive and professional environment for students.

Job Summary

The Water Safety Instructor is responsible for safety, instructing, supervising and testing swim lesson participants. Must be available to work early mornings, days, evenings, and weekends.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be 15 years of age or older.
  • Current certifications in:
    • American Red Cross (or equivalent) CPR and First Aid.

Preferred:

  • Current certifications in:
    • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification.
  • One to Two (1-2) years of swim instructor experience.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Ability to demonstrate the various swimming strokes.
  • Ability to demonstrate skills as required for class content. Will use teaching aids such as kickboards, diving rings, life jackets, etc.
  • Ability to demonstrate water safety skills and swimming strokes.
  • Interpersonal skills, including the ability to facilitate interaction, communication, and teamwork between others.
  • Oral, written, and listening communication skills, including the ability to accurately interpret what others are saying and convey messages, information, concepts, and details accurately and clearly.
  • Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and stay on task when completing special projects and daily assignments.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and reliable professional judgment, as well as collaboratively with a team to achieve desired results.
  • Ability to maintain a strong work ethic, positive problem-solving attitude, and enthusiasm for the work performed.
  • Ability to establish and maintain partnerships with a variety of internal and external constituencies.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and best practices, including customer needs assessments, meeting quality service standards, and evaluating customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of incident response and handling methodologies.
  • Customer service skills, including the ability to actively listen, address customer needs, defuse tense situations, and maintain an open, flexible, and friendly demeanor.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and ages.
Essential Functions
  • Instructs, tests, and evaluates participants in the swim lesson program.
  • Adequately plans and prepares in advance of teaching in an effort to foster skill development in each participant.
  • Evaluates and monitors students' progress.
  • Maintains order and discipline in classes to ensure a safe environment and to promote a learning atmosphere.
  • Provides a safe and fun environment for all participants.
  • Demonstrates professionalism in all forms of communication such as in-person, email, phone calls, video calls and texts.
  • Provide ongoing corrective feedback to participants and relay progress to parents/guardians.
  • Enforces all facility rules and regulations.
  • Attends required staff meetings and trainings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Environment And Physical Requirements
  • Work can be performed either in an indoor or outdoor setting.
  • Work may be performed in varying weather conditions.
  • Regular exposure to loud noise, fumes, and chemicals.
  • Work involves walking, standing, swimming, stretching, bending, as well as lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds.
