Job summary

Hoffman Construction is seeking a Sustainability Project Engineer to act as the on-site sustainability representative. You will coordinate documentation, support LEED and other certifications, track environmental performance, and help implement waste reduction and carbon reduction strategies across complex projects.

This is a fully site-based role with cross-functional collaboration. The position requires civil/architectural/engineering or construction management background, LEED experience, and

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three years of commercial building experience.
  • LEED Accredited Professional, or ability to become accredited within 18 months.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and project management software.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee subcontractor and vendor work to ensure installation schedules.
  • Interpret design and construction documents for material quantities.
  • Coordinate CSA elements within the overall project design.
  • Train client personnel in operations and maintenance of CSA elements.
  • Review submittals and RFIs for accuracy and functionality.
  • Field survey layout and on-site technical advisory duties.
  • Write and publish meeting minutes, schedule graphs, and activity checklists.
  • Coordinate LEED and sustainability certification efforts.

Job description

Position Summary

The Sustainability Project Engineer will work within the Sustainability department and report to the Sustainability Manager. This role serves as the on-site sustainability representative, partnering with project teams, design professionals, clients, and trade partners to support sustainable construction practices and project sustainability goals. The Sustainability Project Engineer will coordinate sustainability documentation, support LEED and other certification efforts, track environmental performance metrics, and help implement solutions that reduce waste, embodied carbon, energy use, and environmental impacts throughout construction. This position will be fully project site based.

Salary Range

$75k-$135k

Oversee subcontractor and vendor installed work daily to ensure that they are maintaining their installation schedule, and support system startup and commissioning activities.

Interpret design, construction documents, technical manuals, and quantifying materials required for construction from the documents.

Coordinate all civil, architectural, and structural (CSA) elements and within the overall project design.

Organize and facilitate training of the client’s personnel in the operations and maintenance of CSA elements and systems.

Review and process submittal information and coordinate between multiple submittals to ensure the accuracy and functionality of each component of the various elements and systems.

Generate, receive, and distribute requests for information (RFI).

Receive and distribute change documents issued by other team members.

Field survey layout of control lines and benchmarks.

Serve as the technical advisor at onsite field construction office.

Write and publish meeting minutes, schedule graphs, and activity checklists.

Sustainability

Coordinate project documentation required for LEED and other sustainability certifications.

Support embodied carbon tracking and reporting for construction materials.

Review Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and sustainability-related submittals.

Monitor project waste diversion performance and collaborate with trade partners to achieve project sustainability goals.

Participate in sustainability planning meetings with owners, design teams, and trade partners.

Support carbon accounting and project sustainability performance reporting.

  • Evaluate energy-efficient systems and promote renewable energy integration within projects.
  • Research emerging technologies and sustainable materials to improve engineering processes.
  • Implement water conservation techniques in engineering projects.
  • Promote awareness and training on sustainability practices across engineering teams.
Qualifications

Professional Experience and Education

High School diploma or GED required.

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, or equivalent degree and/or equivalent field work experience required.

Additional education, training, or certifications related to sustainability in the built environment are preferred

Education background in materials and methods of construction.

A minimum of three (3) years of commercial building experience is required.

Specific experience in industrial and/or hi-tech semiconductor manufacturing projects is preferred.

Ability to interpret and coordinate construction documents, specifications, shop drawings, submittals, and requests for information (RFIs).

LEED Accredited Professional, or the ability to become accredited within eighteen (18) months.

Proficiency in sustainable design principles, renewable energy technologies, carbon accounting methodologies, sustainability assessments, and environmental performance reporting.

Position Related Skills

Proficient in Windows and Microsoft Office 365 (Excel, Word, Outlook, Power Point and Teams),and have a general understanding of working within a computer network.

Experience with project management software such as Prolog, Procore, E-Builder, Bluebeam, Microsoft Project, and Primavera Project Planner (P6).

Experience with design software such as AutoCAD, Revit and Navisworks.

Familiarity with LEED Online, Green Badger, One Click LCA, EC3, or similar sustainability reporting and embodied carbon platforms preferred

Experience with LEED design, data collection, and reporting with support from architectural, engineering, and project teams.

Training in design and construction document reading, design specifications, survey theory and techniques.

Experience in organizing technical data in a neat and accurate method. Familiar with CSI specification system for construction.

Demonstrate a thorough understanding of all aspects of construction.

Highly developed visual observation and interpretation skills.

Ability to work well and maintain a cooperative attitude through high-pressure situations.

Excellent time-management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work while frequently interrupted by phone calls and questions on work in progress.

Excellent written and oral communication skills with an ability to develop strong interpersonal relationships.

Ability to work closely with a variety of trade and craft people in a field work situation. Patience and professionalism are essential.

Must be a strong team player with the ability to collaborate with various personnel within and across departments and at all levels of leadership.

Work schedule must be flexible to allow extended hours or off-shift work to accommodate changing construction schedule and sequences.

Physical and Mental Requirements

Standing/Walking/Sitting: Workday is a combination of being stationary and moving about the work location.

Must be able to climb stairs: Must be able to ascend and descend ladders, scaffolds, stairs and work in confined spaces.

Hands/Arms: Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer. Frequently operates machinery and will use hands/fingers and legs to operate, activate, use, prepare, inspect, place, detect and position materials

Sight: Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus in an outdoor environment. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; reading printed and digital documents

Hearing:Must be able to work in proximity to loud equipment more than 50% of the time. Must be able to wear hearing protection as necessary. Often required to communicate with customers and coworkers in an office setting and on the job site.

Speech:Abilityto communicate laws, ordinances, plans, regulations, protocols, directives, and standard operating procedures related to project scope in English.

Lift/Carry: Must have the ability to lift or manipulate 50 pounds to a height of 3 feet, and carry or push it 50-100 feet.

Kneeling/Crouching/Crawling: Must be able to regularly position self in a kneeling, crouching or crawling position for the purpose of examining project work.

Must use independent judgment, and organizational and problem-solving skills to determine best method to accomplish desired results.
