Job description

Crusoe is on a mission to accelerate the abundance of energy and intelligence. As the only vertically integrated AI infrastructure company built from the ground up, we own and operate each layer of the stack — from electrons to tokens — to power the world's most ambitious AI workloads. When you join Crusoe, you join a team that is building the future, faster.

We're in the midst of the greatest industrial revolution of our time. The demand for AI compute is boundless, and power is a bottleneck. We're solving that — with an energy-first approach that makes AI infrastructure better for the world and faster for the people innovating with AI.

We're looking for problem-solving, opportunity-finding teammates with a sense of urgency, who believe in the scale of our ambition and thrive on a path not fully paved — people who want to grow their careers alongside a team of experts across energy, manufacturing, data center construction, and cloud services.

If you want to do the most meaningful work of your career, help our customers and partners advance their AI strategies, and be part of a high-performing team that believes in each other, come build with us at Crusoe.

About This Role:

  • As a Director, Sustainability, you’ll be a key member of Crusoe’s sustainability team and lead the integration of sustainable design standards and construction practices across our Digital Infrastructure Group. This is a high-impact role that combines deep technical expertise in green building with strategic leadership across broader corporate sustainability initiatives. You will work cross-functionally to embed sustainability into how we plan, design, build, and operate our infrastructure.

What You’ll Be Working On:

Sustainable Design & Construction
  • Lead the implementation of Crusoe’s sustainable design standards across our digital infrastructure projects, partnering with internal design engineering, real estate, and construction teams and external architects, engineers, and contractors to ensure sustainability requirements are embedded from project inception through delivery

  • Drive continuous improvement through capturing portfolio-wide learning and annual updates to the sustainable design standards

  • Monitor and drive improvement in key data center sustainability metrics, including Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE), and Carbon Usage Effectiveness (CUE)

  • Support sustainability due diligence and integration for new data center developments, including environmental impacts and permitting requirements

  • Support the evaluation and implementation of technologies and solutions that enhance energy, water, and operational efficiency (e.g., AI-driven energy management, water reuse and recycling, high-efficiency mechanical and electrical systems, onsite renewable energy, and grid interactivity strategies such as demand response and peak shaving)

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on green building frameworks (LEED, Green Globes, etc.) and drive certification strategies across the portfolio

Embodied Carbon & Materials
  • Own strategy for measuring and reducing embodied carbon across projects, including by evaluating low-carbon and sustainable materials

  • Drive adoption of whole-life carbon assessment methodologies and support teams in integrating these into project workflows

  • Engage with suppliers and industry groups to advance low-carbon material availability and market development

  • Identify and pilot novel low-carbon materials and technologies; work with manufacturers to improve supply chain transparency and reduce product carbon intensity

Broader Sustainability Initiatives
  • Support the development and execution of the company's broader sustainability strategy, including energy, water, waste, biodiversity, and supply chain initiatives

  • Contribute to sustainability reporting (GHG inventory, ESG disclosures, etc.) with particular focus on Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions related to infrastructure

  • Help shape communications on sustainability for diverse audiences including executives, engineering teams, clients, investors, and community stakeholders

  • Manage relationships with third-party consultants, certification bodies, and sustainability-focused vendors

  • Support community and public policy engagement on sustainability-related matters as needed

What You’ll Bring to the Team:

  • Experience: 8-12 years of progressive experience in sustainability, environmental management, or ESG strategy. Experience in the data center, cloud infrastructure, technology, or energy sector is highly preferred.

  • Sector Expertise: Previous experience navigating sustainability for data centers or other related industries.

  • Technical Expertise: Deep knowledge of data center energy consumption, cooling systems, and operational efficiency metrics (PUE, WUE, CUE). Strong expertise in sustainability reporting frameworks (GRI, SASB, CDP, TCFD) and experience leading GHG accounting, lifecycle assessments, and green building certifications.

  • Proven Track Record: Demonstrated success in developing and executing enterprise-wide sustainability programs that deliver measurable environmental and business outcomes in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.

  • Stakeholder Management: Excellent stakeholder management skills with experience engaging C-suite executives, investors, regulators, and cross-functional teams. Strong interpersonal and diplomacy skills with a track record of building lasting relationships.

  • Communication: Outstanding written and verbal communication and presentation skills, with the ability to translate complex environmental data into clear narratives for diverse audiences including board members, investors, and technical teams.

  • Project Management: Strong project management capabilities with experience managing multiple initiatives simultaneously across geographically distributed operations.

  • Travel: Ability to travel up to 15% to Crusoe offices, projects sites and stakeholder meetings.

Bonus Points:

  • LEED Accredited Professional, ISSP Sustainability Associate, CEM (Certified Energy Manager), or similar professional certification.

  • Familiarity with data center sustainability standards such as the EU Energy Efficiency Directive, EPA ENERGY STAR for Data Centers, or The Green Grid frameworks.

  • Experience with renewable energy procurement, Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), and carbon offset programs.
