Job summary

AECOM is seeking a Survey Technician I to operate surveying instruments in the field and collect measurements for boundary and topographic surveys. The role reports to a licensed surveyor and requires travel.

Key tasks include setting up total stations and GPS/GNSS receivers, establishing control points, recording elevations and coordinates, reading plans, and supporting daily field operations while following safety procedures. Occasional work in difficult terrain and varying weather is expected.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Must have a valid U.S. driver's license and the ability to pass MVR checks.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Frequent travel to field locations with overnight stays.

  • Establish and verify survey control points and benchmarks.
  • Take measurements of angles, distances, elevations, and coordinates.
  • Assist with boundary, topographic, ALTA, and as-built surveys.
  • Read and interpret survey drawings, plans, maps, and field notes.
  • Record field measurements accurately using electronic data collectors and surveying software.
  • Locate property corners, monuments, utilities, and other physical features.
  • Maintain and calibrate surveying instruments and equipment.
  • Perform calculations and check field data for accuracy.
  • Assist the survey crew chief and surveyor with daily field operations.
  • Follow company safety procedures and maintain a safe work area.
  • Occasionally work in difficult terrain, construction sites, and varying weather conditions.

Job Description

The Survey Technician I operates surveying instruments and equipment in the field to collect accurate measurements and data for boundary surveys, construction projects, topographic surveys, and other land-surveying activities. They will work under the direction of a licensed surveyor or survey crew chief. This role will require travel.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have a valid U.S. driver's license and as a condition of employment, must be able to pass AECOM's Motor Vehicle Records review.
  • Due to the nature of work, U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Position requires frequent traveling to field locations. Locations and distances vary and will include overnight travel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating a total station and GPS/GNSS equipment is highly desirable.
  • Previous land surveying or construction surveying experience preferred.
  • Ability to read construction plans and survey drawings.
  • Basic knowledge of geometry, trigonometry, and land-surveying principles.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry surveying equipment and work on uneven terrain.

Physical Requirements

  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Work outdoors in heat, cold, rain, and other weather conditions.
  • Lift and carry equipment and tripods.
  • Occasionally walk through wooded areas, uneven ground, or construction sites.
  • Maintain attention to detail and accuracy during field measurements.
