Job summary

As Survey Technician 4, you will support licensed surveyors on a wide range of field and office tasks—including topographic and boundary surveys, legal descriptions, mapping, 3D scanning, and other advanced survey activities that contribute directly to high‑quality project delivery.

This position is designed for a highly skilled survey professional who brings a strong work ethic, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work independently on complex tasks under the guidance of a licensed surveyor. You should demonstrate full proficiency in survey fundamentals and the ability to quickly learn and apply new tools, technologies, and methods as project needs evolve.

Project Delivery

Produces the following independently and assist others in the field, office, or both. Field data including:

  • Clear and concise field notes
  • Basic equipment maintenance checks
  • Topographic data collection
  • Monument field recovery

Produces the following under limited direction/oversight from others in the office:

  • Basic boundary resolutions
  • Basic construction calculations
  • Control network planning
  • Point cloud extractions
  • Research of public records
  • Basic construction layout
Understanding Budget and Schedule

Strong understanding of scopes, schedules, and budgets. Demonstrates ability to predict and deliver individual tasks within a set level of effort. Able to consistently meet scope, schedule, and budget expectations on projects. Assists with the scoping, planning, and budget creation on more complex tasks.

Industry Standards and Regulations

Provide mentoring to staff on industry or client standards such as the following:

  • Local platting, surveying standards
  • ASPRS
  • Client standards
Client Interaction

Infrequent direct client interaction. Reads emails. Occasionally attends client meetings. Listens and prepares meeting minutes.

Level of Work/Accountability

Performs advanced levels of technical work on large, complex projects. Operates with a high level of autonomy. Reviews the work of others. May perform some assistant project management tasks. Provides technical guidance on proposals.

Supervisory Duties

May be a supervisor:

  • Oversees team operations and the daily workflow of the team
  • Organizes workflow and ensures that employees understand their duties or delegated tasks
  • Recruits and hires new employees
  • Implements training for new hires and identifies training opportunities for current staff
  • Communicates information from leadership to employees and vice versa
  • Monitors employee productivity and provides constructive feedback and coaching

Education and/or Experience
  • Associate’s or Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • Years of experience required: 6 years
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Field surveying and office production-specific certifications preferred
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record
Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to create and interpret graphs and understand statistical analysis.

Able to cut brush using chain saw or machete. Able to dig with shovel or digging bars, use a jack hammer and sledgehammer, and drive in stakes and rebar (monuments). Able to walk and hike through rough terrain, snow, and ice. Able to routinely lift and carry between 30 and 50 pounds. May need to work at remote sites.
