Job summary

J. Benton Construction in the Virgin Islands is seeking a Survey & Layout Manager to lead the enterprise-wide survey and layout program across regional projects.

You will set standards, manage field personnel and equipment, and integrate layout strategy into project planning to ensure safe, accurate delivery. This regional role requires inter-island travel and close partnership with operations, project management, self-perform teams, and external stakeholders to drive quality and efficiency on

Qualifications

• Associate's or bachelor's degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in construction survey, layout, or field engineering.
• Demonstrated experience leading or supervising layout or survey teams.
• Advanced proficiency with total stations, GPS, and laser layout systems.
• Strong understanding of construction drawings, specifications, tolerances, and control systems.
• OSHA-10 or ability to obtain within a required timeline.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the survey and layout program, including staffing, training, performance management, and professional development.
• Establish and enforce company-wide layout standards, procedures, and quality control protocols.
• Review project drawings, specifications, schedules, and scope to develop project-specific survey and layout plans.
• Plan and allocate layout resources across projects and islands to support schedules and complexity.
• Serve as the technical authority for construction layout and surveying, guiding field teams.
• Review and verify control networks, benchmarks, and layout prior to major construction activities.
• Oversee layout for complex scopes including foundations, structures, MEP, architectural control, and civil work.
• Coordinate with project management, field supervision, designers, external surveyors, and trade partners to resolve dimensional conflicts.
• Support constructability reviews, RFIs, and sequencing strategies related to layout and site logistics.
• Manage layout and survey equipment, including calibration, maintenance, and upgrades.
• Ensure all survey and layout operations comply with company safety standards and OSHA requirements.

Position Description

The Survey & Layout Manager leads J. Benton Construction’s enterprise-wide survey and layout program across all active projects. This role establishes standards, manages field personnel and equipment, ensures quality control, and integrates layout strategy into project planning and layout activities execution.

Serving as the technical authority for all field layout and surveying activities, this position partners closely with field operations, project management, self-perform teams, and external stakeholders to support safe, accurate, and efficient project delivery.

This position is a regional position and will require inter-island travel.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage JBC’s survey and layout program, including staffing, training, performance management, and professional development
• Establish, maintain, and enforce company-wide layout standards, procedures, and quality control protocols
• Review project drawings, specifications, schedules, and scope requirements to develop project-specific survey and layout plans.
• Plan and allocate layout resources across projects and islands to support schedules, scope, and complexity
• Serve as the technical authority for construction layout and surveying, providing guidance and oversight to field teams
• Review and verify control networks, benchmarks, and layout prior to major construction activities
• Oversee layout for complex scopes including foundations, structures, MEP, architectural control, and civil work
• Coordinate with project management, field supervision, designers, external surveyors, and trade partners to resolve dimensional conflicts

Essential Skills & Competencies

• Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD/Civil 3D and/or construction layout software
• Proficiency in the preparation, verification, and management of digital layout files and field data.
• Strong leadership and team development capabilities

• Advanced technical expertise in construction surveying and layout
• Strong communication and stakeholder coordination skills
• High attention to detail and commitment to quality
• Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously

Required Qualifications

Preferred Experience (includes, but is not limited to):

• Licensed Professional Surveyor, current or previous
• FAA 107 Drone Operations
• OSHA 30

Physical and Work Environment Requirements:

• Ability to work outdoors in varying tropical weather conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, and sun exposure
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work on uneven terrain for extended periods
• Ability to navigate active construction sites with changing ground conditions and elevations
• Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull tools, materials, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
• Ability to safely use ladders, scaffolding, and other access equipment as required
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)

Compensation & Benefits

The base salary for this position is one component of J. Benton Construction’s total compensation package. Actual compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors, including a candidate’s skills, experience, education, relevant qualifications, internal equity, and business needs.
