Job summary

Keeley Companies seeks a Survey Crew Chief to lead a field survey team in St. Louis, MO, conducting topographic, construction staking, and other land surveys. You will set up GPS and other instruments, ensure precise data collection, and document survey work for project needs.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; an associate or bachelor's degree is a plus.
  • Typically 3–5 years of land surveying and/or construction layout experience, with 1–2 years in a leadership role.
  • Proficiency with Trimble equipment is required.
  • Experience with boundary, topographic, construction staking, and ALTA/NSPS surveys is preferred.
  • Read and interpret electrical, structural and civil plans is a plus.
  • AutoCAD and Microsoft Office experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a field survey crew in topographic, construction staking, and other land surveys.
  • Set up and operate GPS equipment, total stations, levels, and other surveying instruments.
  • Ensure accurate data collection: measurements, angles, elevations.
  • Document survey data through field notes, sketches, and records.
  • Coordinate daily tasks and schedules for the survey crew to meet deadlines.
  • Communicate with project managers, clients, engineers, and stakeholders on requirements and progress.
  • Interpret survey data and provide design/construction recommendations.
  • Ensure accuracy and precision, verify data, and cross-check measurements.
  • Identify and resolve field discrepancies or issues.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations and company safety standards.
  • Maintain and calibrate surveying equipment; report issues for replacement.
  • Prepare and submit detailed survey reports, sketches, maps, and digital data files.
  • Maintain organized records of survey activities and findings.
  • Contribute input to project plans, estimates, and schedules.

We are looking to hire a Survey Crew Chief for our growing Geospatial Group in St. Louis, MO.


Primary Responsibilities


  • Lead and manage a field survey crew in conducting topographic, construction staking, and other types of land surveys.

  • Set up and operate GPS equipment, total stations, levels, and other surveying instruments.

  • Ensure accurate data collection, including measurements, angles, and elevations.

  • Conduct detailed field notes, sketches, and records to document survey data and site conditions.

  • Coordinate daily tasks and schedules for the survey crew to ensure project deadlines are met.

  • Communicate effectively with project managers, clients, engineers, and other stakeholders regarding project requirements and progress.

  • Interpret survey data and provide recommendations for project design and construction.

  • Ensure accuracy and precision of survey work, including verification of data and cross-checking of measurements.

  • Identify and resolve discrepancies or issues encountered in the field.

  • Ensure all work complies with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as company policies and safety standards.

  • Ensure proper care, maintenance, and calibration of surveying equipment and tools.

  • Report any equipment issues or needs for replacement to the appropriate department.

  • Prepare and submit detailed survey reports, including sketches, maps, and digital data files.

  • Maintain organized and up-to-date records of survey activities and findings.

  • Provide input into the preparation of project plans, estimates, and schedules.


Minimum Qualifications


  • High school diploma or equivalent; an associate or bachelor’s degree in surveying, geomatics, civil engineering, or a related field is a plus.

  • Typically 3-5 years of experience in land surveying and/or construction layout, with at least 1-2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.

  • Electrical, Structural and Civil plan reading experience, a plus.

  • AutoCAD and Microsoft office experience, a plus.

  • Trimble equipment experience, required.

  • Experience with a variety of survey types, including boundary, topographic, construction staking, and ALTA/NSPS surveys.

  • Proficiency in using surveying equipment such as GPS units, total stations, levels, and data collectors.

  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

  • Strong leadership and communication skills to effectively manage a team and coordinate with other stakeholders.

  • Problem-solving abilities to address challenges that arise in the field.

  • Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy and precision in data collection and reporting.
