Job summary

Barge Design Solutions is seeking a Survey Crew Chief to lead field surveying teams, brief and debrief crews, process field notes and data, retrace or survey property boundaries, and draft maps and reports for approval by a Registered Land Surveyor.

The role involves mentoring others, handling QA/QC, and performing field surveying with minimal supervision. This on-site position requires strong leadership and extensive knowledge of surveying practices.

Qualifications

• Two-year degree in Engineering Technology, Computer Drafting, Surveying, or equivalent with 7 years of relevant experience.
• Skilled in the use of survey instruments (GPS, robotics, data collectors, level rods etc.)
• Experience in boundary and topographic surveys, construction staking, and reading construction documents
• Ability to lead and instruct field staff

Responsibilities

• Assist in planning tasks for projects including pricing, planning, estimation, and task coordination.
• Communicate with Clients, Project Managers, Surveyors, Geomaticists, Managers, and stakeholders to provide accurate data.
• Perform field surveying and ensure accuracy of data collected by the field crew.
• Conduct field calculations (horizontal/vertical geometry) to determine property boundaries and stake out sites.
• Prepare finished grade sheets, topographic maps, records of survey, corner records, and other survey reports.
• Review field data and maps to ensure QA techniques and provide feedback to the team.
• Conduct site visits ensuring QC standards are followed.
• Research record information (maps, deeds, easements, ROW) and maintain field data records.

What We're Looking For:

Barge Design Solutions is seeking a Survey Crew Chief that assists in briefing and debriefing field crews, processing field notes and data, retracing or surveying property boundaries, writing reports, drafting maps, and preparing final surveys under minimal supervision for approval by a Registered Land Surveyor. Additionally, this position directly leads and mentors others while engaged in field surveying work.

Responsibilities

• Assist in performing a subset of tasks for project planning including pricing, planning, estimation, and coordination of tasks for a project.
• Contact and communicate with Clients, Project Managers, Surveyors, Geomaticist, Managers, and other stakeholders providing accurate data.
• Perform field surveying for various projects and ensure accuracy of data collected by the field crew.
• Perform moderately complex field calculations (such as calculating horizontal and vertical geometry of roadways or for construction stake outs), determine property boundaries, retrace and survey boundary lines.
• Prepare finished grade sheets, topographic maps, records of survey, corner records, and other survey reports.
• Review field data, reports, and maps to ensure proper QA techniques, provide feedback and coaching back to project team.
• Conduct site visits ensuring proper QC standards are followed.
• Research existing record information, including record maps, plans, deeds, easements, and right-of-way documents, and ensure maintenance of field data records.

Education & Experience Qualifications:

• Two-year degree in Engineering Technology, Computer Drafting, Surveying, or equivalent with 7 years of relevant experience, or other relevant combination of education and/or experience
• Skilled in the use of maintenance of survey instruments (GPS, robotics, data collectors, level rods, etc.)
• Experienced in all aspects of land surveying including boundary surveys, topographic surveys, construction staking, etc. with the ability to read and interpret various types of construction and property documents
• Ability to effectively instruct, direct, and lead others in the field
• Ability to read and interpret plats, deeds, easements, and plans
• Knowledge of field surveying practices and procedures; building knowledge of office surveying practices and proceduresValid driver's license and sufficient driving record
• Ability to work varying schedules
• Ability to travel at times and overnight
• Daily work environment includes working out of doors and in rough terrain. Individuals will walk, sit, and stand while operating various equipment, tools, and machinery.
• Individuals may need to carry, push, pull, or lift up to 50 lbs. Individuals may need to climb to various elevations and requires visual acuity sufficient to read alpha/numeric symbols and perform computation and design.
