Job description

Position Purpose

This position provides patient care of technical nature. The technologist is responsible for supplying the operating room with the proper equipment and instrumentation that's needed for specific surgery. During the procedure the primary responsibilities of the technologist are to maintain the sterility of the surgical field, anticipate the needs of the surgeons, and pass instruments in a timely fashion.

Under direct supervision the technologist may be asked to perform the following duties:

  • Sponge or suction.
  • Hold retractors or instruments placed by the surgeons.
  • Apply electrocautery to clamps on bleeders.
  • Irrigate the operative site.
  • Cut suture material.
  • Connect drains to the suction apparatus.
  • Apply dressings to the wound.

Once the procedure is completed it is the responsibility of the technologist to care for the instrumentation and equipment and prepare for the following case.

This position will provide any assistance needed to expedite the room turnover thereby providing optimum customer service to the surgeon, patient, anesthesiologist, and co‑workers.

In addition, this position is responsible for supply inventory, updating written procedures, meeting with company representatives regarding new supplies and equipment, and other duties required to ensure optimum utilization of the service.

This position, in cooperation with the Operating Room Educator and management team, provides training for staff in their respective service specialty.

This position assists in coordinating staff assignments for their respective service specialty.

Additional responsibilities may include maintaining the call schedule to provide continuous service.

Nature and Scope

This position serves a patient population of Neonatal, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric. The incumbent must provide optimal patient care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of neonatal, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients and families.

This position provides technical skills as a member of the surgical team, communicating with supervisors, other surgery staff, surgeons, and anesthesiologists.

The demands on this position are very dynamic because of rapid changes in medical procedures, technical knowledge, instrumentation, equipment, policies, procedures, and because of surgeon's preferences in equipment, instruments, needles, and suture.

This position has the freedom to decide the type of equipment and supplies required for the surgical care of the patient relative to the surgeon's preference cards and knowledge of the procedure, and to identify any breakdown in aseptic technique and take appropriate action.

This position ensures equipment is working properly before surgical procedure, cares for equipment after procedure, and is responsible for reporting equipment that is not working properly or is broken.

This position does provide patient care.

Minimum Qualifications

Requirements - Required and/or Preferred

  • Education: Must have working‑level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing and speaking English.
  • Experience: Minimum one year as an O.R. Technician required.
  • License(s): None.
  • Certification(s): Current BLS certification by the American Heart Association standards required. Certification of surgical technologists preferred. Surgical First Assistant: Surgical Technologist may perform in the capacity of a first assist if graduated from a surgical assistant first assistant program that included didactic and supervised clinical practice, based on The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting requirements in 2002‑01, 4002‑01, 2003‑40. If uncertified, incumbent is required to complete at least 15 hours of continuing education concerning the practice of surgical technology upon completion of first year of employment and on an annual basis thereafter. If certified, incumbent must maintain minimum qualifications to maintain certification.
  • Computer / Typing: Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computer skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job‑specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
