Job summary

UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL seeks a dedicated Surgical Technologist to join our OR team. You will assist surgeons at the sterile field, manage instruments and prostheses, and support routine sterilization and equipment maintenance. The role requires adherence to standards of care and active participation in patient safety.

The position is full-time, 36 hours per week, with duties focused on delivering high-quality patient care in a dynamic surgical environment.

Qualifications

  • AST certification required and AST recertification maintained.
  • Graduate of a recognized surgical technologist program.

Responsibilities

  • Contributes to continuity of care under the direction of a registered nurse and assists surgeons at the sterile field with instruments.
  • Performs routine maintenance, cleaning/sterilization, and management of surgical equipment and prostheses when applicable.
  • Maintains knowledge of procedures and equipment, and participates in patient care activities per standards.
  • Coordinates OR equipment use based on schedule and patient needs, and supports infection control and safety policies.

Responsibilities
  • Contributes to continuity of care under the direction of a registered nurse.
  • Assist surgeons at the sterile field with instruments needed for each procedure as defined by preference cards and special request.
  • Provides for routine maintenance, cleaning/sterilization, and management of equipment (and prostheses, if applicable).
  • Maintains current knowledge of procedures and equipment/instruments.
  • Implements other patient care activities as assigned according to Standards of Care and Practice.
  • Coordinates the use of equipment based on OR schedule and patient needs.
  • Utilizes computer information management systems to facilitate patient care.
Facilitates daily operations/flow of work of assigned area(s)
  • Organizes and reprioritizes work based on patients' needs, available resources, and unit requirements.
  • Supports compliance with hospital accreditation, state licensure, and other external accrediting agency requirements.
  • Reviews unit/department communication to maintain current working knowledge of job responsibilities.
Contributes to a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, and staff by following policies, procedures, and protocols
  • Identifies patients at risk for injury and participates in instituting measures to prevent/reduce the risk.
  • Adheres to AGE APPROPRIATE PROTOCOLS in order to ensure patient safety based on developmental needs.
  • Contributes to prevention of infectious diseases among employees, patients, and visitors by adhering to Infection Control policies and procedures.
  • Completes employee accident reports and contributes information to complete incident, medication variance, infection control variance reports.
  • Reports environmental safety hazards, including damaged and broken equipment.
  • Responds to patient monitor alarms in a timely fashion.
  • Ensures emergency readiness, and initiates timely emergency measures as appropriate according to role responsibilities.
Participates in the achievement of unit/department fiscal goals
  • Conserves hospital resources.
  • Contributes to capture of patient charges and revenue generation.
Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • AST certification required and AST or NCCT certification maintained.
  • Graduate of a recognized surgical technologist program

Motor Vehicle Operator Designation: Employees in this position: Will not operate vehicles for an assigned business purpose

Licensure/Certification/Registration: AST certification, AST or NCCT recertification.
