Job summary

Northwell Health is seeking a Surgical Scrub Technician to support the nursing care activities within our surgical services. You will assist the surgical team by preparing the suite and ensuring sterile conditions for procedures, while maintaining patient confidentiality.

Preferred candidates have 1 year of OR experience and hold Surgical Technician Certification along with BLS. High school diploma or equivalent is required, and a commitment to reliable attendance is essential.

  • Prefer: One year of operating room and surgical technician experience.
  • Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology.
  • Basic computer skills, MS Outlook.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the surgical team in coordinating nursing care activities in the surgical services environment.
  • Prepare the surgical suite using available data and ensure sterile processing and proper equipment placement.
  • Perform sponge, sharps and instrument counts according to policy.
  • Maintain a safe surgical environment with clean facilities and proper workflow.
  • Protect patient confidentiality and communicate clearly with the care team.
  • Stay current with trends in health care and participate in ongoing education and quality assurance.
  • Model REACH values and maintain reliable attendance.

Purpose:

This role assumes responsibility and accountability for the function of scrub technician assisting with the nursing care activities in the surgical services environment. Individuals apply learned principles in coordinating activities directed at assisting the surgical team in implementation of care. Population served based on scope of services in the department.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Collects and utilizes available data necessary for the proper preparation of the surgical suite.
  • Performs proper sponge, sharps and instrument counts according to policy and procedure, demonstrated by lack of occurrences.
  • Maintains a safe surgical environment, assuring overall cleanliness of the surgical suite, proper placement of supplies to ensure a safe traffic pattern and verifies sterile processing through validation of integrity of sterile packaging.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and provides safe patient care through clear communication and collegial working relationships.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of current trends and practices in the health care field, utilizing available educational materials and professional development opportunities.
  • Utilizes materials and equipment in a safe, therapeutic and cost effective manner, consistently checking all equipment for working order and reporting unsafe conditions.
  • Participates and complies with the results of quality assurance audits and findings.
  • Consistently demonstrates an application of surgical technologist knowledge to perform assigned functions.

  • Demonstrates regular, reliable and predictable attendance.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Education and Experience Requirements:
  • High School diploma or equivalent experience.
  • PREFER: One (1) year of operating room and surgical technician experience.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Requirements:
  • Basic understanding of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology.
  • Basic computer skills, i.e. MS Outlook.
License, Registration, or Certification Requirements:
  • Surgical Technician Certification through an accredited educational institution.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certified.
