Avera Orthopedic Hospital-Sioux Falls is seeking a Surgical Technician to support operating room and clinic procedures. The position requires a technical certificate in Surgical Technology and may prefer NBSTSA CST credentials, with 1–3 years of prior experience.

You will work with a multidisciplinary team to prepare ORs, manage instruments, implants, and patient transport. Responsibilities include maintaining sterile fields, assisting surgeons and circulating nurses, and ensuring equipment

Qualifications

• Technical Certificate Completion of an accredited Surgical Technician program.
• NBSTSA Certified Surgical Tech (CST) preferred upon hire.
• 1-3 years Previous experience as a Surgical Technician.

Responsabilités

• Prepares the Operating Room for surgical procedures in a timely fashion, organizing equipment and instruments; setting up for emergency cases; ensuring adequate equipment for all cases.
• Assists the surgeon as the first or second scrub person during procedures, maintains a sterile field at all times, handles instruments efficiently, and verifies specimens with surgeons and nurses.
• Assists the circulating nurse to account for all instruments, needles, and sponges involved with the procedure.
• Maintains working knowledge of OR machinery and equipment (lasers, scopes, electric and nitrogen motors).
• Receives and verifies correct implants for all procedures (grafts, hardware, allografts).
• Assists with on-the-job training and orientation of new staff and students.
• Assists in transporting patients to the O.R. when necessary.
• Performs decontamination, assembly and sterilization per Infection Control and QA guidelines; annual competency review.
• Operates sterilization equipment and related devices following safety protocols, with competency validation.
• Uses desktop and handheld devices for instrument decontamination, assembly and tracking functions.

A Brief Overview

Assists the physician and nursing staff both in the Operating Room and Clinic with procedures and patient care as needed.

What you will do

• Prepares the Operating Room for surgical procedures in a timely fashion. This may include, not be limited to: organizing equipment and needed instruments; setting up quickly and accurately for emergency cases; assuring proper and adequate equipment for all cases.
• Assists the surgeon as the first or second scrub person during surgical procedures. Maintains a sterile field at all times in the procedure area. Maintains efficiency in handling surgical instruments at physician’s request. Verifies specimens with surgeons and nurses.
• Assists the circulating nurse to account for all instruments, needles, and sponges involved with the surgical procedure.
• Achieves and maintains working knowledge of all OR machinery and equipment used on the sterile field (i.e., lasers, scope equipment, and electric and nitrogen motors).
• Receives and verifies correct implants for all surgical procedures (i.e., grafts, orthopedic hardware, allograft etc.).
• Assists with on-the-job training and orientation of new staff and students.
• Assists in transporting of patients to the O.R. when necessary.
• Performs decontamination, assembly and sterilization, according to Infection Control and established QA monitoring guidelines as demonstrated by annual competency review.
• Operates sterilization equipment which includes: steam and hydrogen peroxide sterilizers, ultrasonic cleaner, washer/sterilizer, and automated cart washer. Operates equipment according to manufacturer operational directions and in a manner that ensures the safety of the operator as demonstrated by annual competency review.
• Utilizes desktop and laptop computers and handheld PDA for instrument decontamination, assembly and tracking functions.

Required Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience:

• Technical Certificate Completion of an accredited Surgical Technician program

• Certified Surgical Tech (CST) - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) Upon Hire
• 1-3 years Previous experience as a Surgical Technician
