Job summary

Allegheny Health Network is seeking a Surgical Technologist to support the operating room team before, during and after procedures. You will assist with prepping instruments, maintaining sterile technique and ensuring patient safety throughout the surgical workflow.

The role requires a certificate from a college or tech school (or related experience) and prefers 1–3 years in surgical technology, with certification within six months of hire. On-site position in a hospital setting.

Qualifications

  • Minimum one year certificate from a college or technical school; or 3–6 months related experience or equivalent.
  • Preferred 1–3 years of Surgical Technologist experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in setting up the surgical operating suite with instruments and supplies.
  • Uses aseptic technique and standard precautions; handles medications and specimens per policy.
  • Assists with preparing, positioning and draping patients; participates in surgical pause to verify patient and site.
  • Understands surgeon preference and patient care variables; helps update surgeon preference materials.
  • Performs sponge, needle, and instrument count.
  • Cares for and uses resources to promote cost-effective, efficient patient care environment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

GENERAL OVERVIEW

This job performs direct and indirect technical tasks for patients before, during, and after surgical interventions.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assists in setting up the surgical operating suite with appropriate instruments and supplies. (20%)
  • Utilizes proper aseptic techniques and practices standard precautions. Follows policy for medication and specimen handling. (20%)
  • Assists with preparing, positioning and draping patients and participates in the surgical pause to assure correct patient and surgical site. (20%)
  • Understands, anticipates and adapts to surgeon preference and patient care variables, and contributes to updating surgeon preference materials. (20%)
  • Performs sponge, needle, and instrument count. (10%)
  • Cares for and utilizes resources to promote cost effective and efficient environment for patients. (10%)
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum One year certificate from a college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Preferred 1-3 years of Surgical Technologist experience.
ADDITIONAL EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
  • Surgical Technologist (ST) hired after 12/29/2020 require one of the following: Education and Certification: Accredited Surgical Technologist program completion and nationally recognized certification (CST, TS-C) within 6 months of hire. Military programs accepted. Pre-existing Employment: Employment as a surgical technologist by this facility before 12/29/2020, or at another facility within the two years prior to 12/29/2020. CPR – American Heart Association within 60 days of hire.
