Job summary

MU Health Care seeks a dedicated surgical technician to join the University Hospital team in Columbia, MO. The role supports patient care from pre-op to post-op, coordinating with surgical teams to optimize outcomes and maintain sterile environments.

Ideal candidates will be proactive, organized, and focused on process improvement to ensure smooth OR operations and excellent patient experiences. On-site role with comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• 1 year of experience as a surgical technologist, or completion of an accredited surgical tech program (MU Health Care Surgical Tech program or military training) may be substituted.

• Anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
• Assist with teaching of newly hired technologists and student technologists; serve as a role model.
• Communicate effectively with patients, staff, and physicians; adhere to policies and patient safety goals.
• Maintain a sterile field and ensure team maintains a sterile environment independently.
• Perform duties involving care, preparation, and maintenance of sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment in the operating rooms.

Job description

Shift:Monday - Friday, 9am to 7:30pm, 4 ten hour days. Fair share call / holidays

Work Arrangement:On-Site
Department: Operating Room University Hospital

Facility: University Hospital – 1 Hospital Drive, Columbia, MO
Compensation:

• Base Pay Range: $25.32 to $39.99 per hour, based on experience
• Special Pay: Additional $1.88 per hour until January 2, 2027
• Shift Differentials: Additional $2 per hour evenings/nights/weekends
• Retention Rewards: Up to $15,000
• Relocation Support: Additional $5,000 if moving from over 50 miles away
• Retention Reward (Option 1): $2,000 per year for up to 5 years, totaling $10,000
• Student Loan Repayment (Option 2): $2,000 per year for student loans, up to 5 years, totaling $10,000

DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION

• Anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
• Assist with the teaching of newly hired technologists and student technologists; Serve as a role model to new employees and other staff members.
• Communicate effectively with patients, staff members, and physicians; Adherence to standards including but not limited to unit and hospital policies and procedures, regulatory standards, and patient safety goals.
• Competent at the unit level.
• Demonstrate appropriate and correct case preparation.
• Establish and maintain a sterile field and ensure the team maintains a sterile environment independently. Apply basic knowledge of instrumentations to several cases. Correct any deficiencies at the case level.
• Perform technical duties involving care, preparation, and maintenance of sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment in the operating rooms to provide a safe and effective environment.
• May complete unit/department-specific duties and expectations as outlined in department documents.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities can be acquired.
• One (1) year of experience as a surgical technologist; or completion of an accredited surgical tech program, the MU Health Care Surgical Tech program, or military training may be substituted for the experience.Use bullet points for each new requirement

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Training and experience in all areas of specialty and Trauma (Level I) call.
• Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.
