Job summary

Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD, is seeking a Surgical Technician to join a multidisciplinary team. The role supports the pre-, intra-, and post-procedure periods, assists with OR setup, maintains a sterile field, and helps surgeons and nurses with instruments and specimens.

You will operate decontamination and sterilization equipment, manage implants, and participate in training new staff while ensuring patient safety and efficiency in the OR.

Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Technician program.
  • NBSTSA CST certification preferred upon hire.
  • Less than 1 year experience as a Surgical Technician.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare Operating Room for procedures and organize equipment.
  • Assist surgeon as scrub person; maintain sterile field.
  • Assist circulating nurse with instruments, needles, and sponges.
  • Operate sterilization equipment and track decontamination.
  • Enter and maintain inventory; support training of new staff.

Work where you matter.A Brief OverviewResponds and assists the professional nursing staff and Physicians during the pre-procedure, procedure, and post procedure period. This position will assist with procedure room set-up, equipment cleaning and maintenance, pre and post procedure assistance as directed by the Registered Nurse as well as entering and maintaining inventory control and clerical duties for the department.What you will doPrepares the Operating Room for surgical procedures in a timely fashion. This may include, not be limited to: organizing equipment and needed instruments; setting up quickly and accurately for emergency cases; assuring proper and adequate equipment for all cases.Assists the surgeon as the first or second scrub person during surgical procedures. Maintains a sterile field at all times in the procedure area. Maintains efficiency in handling surgical instruments at physician’s request. Verifies specimens with surgeons and nurses.Assists the circulating nurse to account for all instruments, needles, and sponges involved with the surgical procedure.Achieves and maintains working knowledge of all OR machinery and equipment used on the sterile field (i.e., lasers, scope equipment, and electric and nitrogen motors).Receives and verifies correct implants for all surgical procedures (i.e., grafts, orthopedic hardware, allograft etc.).Assists with on-the-job training and orientation of new staff and students.Assists in transporting of patients to the O.R. when necessary.Performs decontamination, assembly and sterilization, according to Infection Control and established QA monitoring guidelines as demonstrated by annual competency review.Operates sterilization equipment which includes: steam and hydrogen peroxide sterilizers, ultrasonic cleaner, washer/sterilizer, and automated cart washer. Operates equipment according to manufacturer operational directions and in a manner that ensures the safety of the operator as demonstrated by annual competency review.Utilizes desktop and laptop computers and handheld PDA for instrument decontamination, assembly and tracking functions.Essential QualificationsThe individual must be able to work the hours specified.
