The Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) collaborates with the surgeon and the health care team to perform a safe operation with optimal outcomes for the patient. The CSFA works in collaboration with and at the direction of the surgeon during the intraoperative experience. The CSFA’s assist does not concurrently function as a scrub tech; the CSFA may take a scrub role when not needed as a first assistant.
The CSFA may not access the patient’s chart for pertinent information, participate in auto‑transfusions, or participate in pre‑surgical or post‑operative care of the patient.
Successful experience as a CSFA for a minimal of a year is preferred, or a minimal two‑year duration in an operating room that provides care to major orthopedic cases.
