Job summary

The Hughston Clinic is seeking a qualified Surgical Technologist to support orthopedic procedures in the operating room. You will assist with sterile setup, instrument handling, and turnover, collaborating closely with RNs and surgeons to ensure patient safety and efficiency.

The role requires one year of OR experience, orthopedic exposure, and a current BLS certification, with education through an approved Surgical Technologist program or equivalent history.

Qualifications

  • One year OR experience required.
  • Orthopaedic surgical experience preferred.
  • Graduate of an approved Surgical Technologist program or equivalent experience.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and provide sterile supplies, instruments and equipment during surgical procedure.
  • Maintain the sterile environment/technique.
  • Maintain control over all counts during surgery.
  • Ensure proper functioning of equipment and verify instruments and implants are accounted for.
  • Follow department policies and procedures and OR turnover guidelines.
  • Demonstrate adherence to universal precautions and protect personnel and equipment.

Job description

** Work Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday; (3) 12hr shifts with flexibility as needed. **

Position Goal

The Surgical Technologist (Scrub Tech) functions under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and performs delegated functions such as planning, preparing and setting up for cases, and managing supplies and equipment. The work that is performed is done under the established policies and procedures of the institution and according to the experience and scope of educational requirements of the individual and applicable legal guidelines. The Scrub Tech will be expected to anticipate the needs of the patient and physician and make decisions within the scope of their practice.

Position Responsibilities:
CLINICAL:
  • Prepare and provide sterile supplies, instruments and equipment during surgical procedure.
  • Maintain the sterile environment/technique.
  • Maintain control over all "countables" during surgery.
  • Ensure proper functioning of all equipment prior to use intraoperatively. Verify with the circulator that all required instruments, supplies, and implants are accounted for before the start of surgery.
  • Maintain knowledge and follow all Policies and Procedures of the department.
  • Function within the scope of Certification.
  • Follow OR policies & procedures for "turnover" between cases, while maintaining efficiency.
  • Demonstrate ability to follow Universal Precautions, wearing personal protection equipment, works safely, and treats instruments and equipment with respect.
PATIENT SAFETY
  • Comply with surgical site verification and time out policies.
  • Review the planned procedure.
  • Verify all equipment is functioning and inspect for safety prior to use.
  • Complete all counts accurately.
  • Verify the sterility of all items prior to introduction onto the sterile field.
  • Monitor the sterile field for any breaks or potential breaks in sterility.
LEADERSHIP:
  • Remain current on all QI monitors maintained in the OR, reading each monthly report and suggesting future monitors.
  • Maintain Service Project through staff education, facilitate new equipment purchases and product contract changes. Facilitate equipment repairs with surgeons and staff notification, requesting loaners if appropriate to minimize "down time".
  • Maintain effective communication with peers, surgeons, and management.
  • Serve as a role model and preceptor for new staff.
PERSONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMEN T:
  • Attend department in-services as appropriate.
  • Assist in new staff orientation as assigned.
  • Take responsibility for determining learning needs and seek out opportunities.
  • Demonstrate awareness of changes and advances in field.
Experience:
Required:
  • One (1) year OR experience
  • Orthopaedic surgical experience
Education:
Required:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of an approved Surgical Technologist program. One (1) year of Surgical Technologist experience may be considered in lieu of education.
Special Qualifications:
Required:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
Preferred:
  • Surgical Technologist Certification
