Job summary

A leading healthcare provider is seeking a Surgical Technologist to assist surgeons in cardiac and vascular surgeries in Lancaster. Qualifications

  • Candidates must have a High School Diploma or complete a surgical technologist program.
  • Surgical Technologist certification must be maintained within six months of hire.
  • Preferred: Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification (BCLS).
  • Associate’s degree or equivalent certification in Surgical Technology.
  • U.S. military training in Surgical Technology accepted.
  • Prior Penn Medicine surgical tech employment before 12/29/2020 or other facility experience as primary role in the two years prior.

Responsibilities

  • Assist surgeons during cardiac and vascular procedures.
  • Maintain sterile field and proper setup for surgical equipment.
  • Anticipate and supply the surgeon's needs during procedures.
  • Identify emergencies and respond promptly; support interdisciplinary teams for complex cases.
  • On-call for emergencies with 30-minute response and weekend coverage.
  • Instruct students and staff in Cardiac and Vascular procedures.
  • Assist circulating nurse with direct patient care.
  • Maintain inventory and rotate stock; communicate extra tasks to charge nurse.

Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster, PA

Sign-on Bonus

Up to $15,000.00 (prorated based on hours worked per week) with a 2-year commitment. External and internal eligible candidates only.

Position Details

Full time (40 hours per week/1.0 FTE). Hours are between 6:30am - 3:00pm, 5 eight-hour shifts. On-call requirements with a 30-minute response time. On call for 2 weekends out of a 6-week period. One summer and one winter holiday requirement.

Position Summary

Assists surgeons in the delivery of patient care during Cardiac and Vascular cases by performing a variety of duties related to the preparation of surgical supplies, instrumentation, and equipment under a Registered Nurse. Patient care includes care to patients in the following age groups: neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.

Essential Functions
  • Assists surgeons, according to OR standards of practice and policies, during procedures. Provides assistance to surgeons for all procedures, and is responsible for maintenance of sterile field, proper set-up, and handling and maintenance of surgical equipment. Provides accurate reporting to other health care personnel.
  • Functions as first assistant to the surgeon by handling tissue, using instruments to provide wound exposure and hemostasis, suction, sponge and use of electrocautery when needed, cutting tissue, and tying suture as directed by surgeon, which may include closure of surgical wound.
  • Anticipates and supplies surgeon’s needs for instruments, supplies, and equipment in such a manner that the surgeon need not divert his/her attention from operative field.
  • Identifies emergency situations and responds in a calm and efficient manner. Recognizes surgical complications and anticipates corrective measures, assuring expeditious treatment.
  • Works with interdisciplinary teams such as Cath Lab, IVU and EP to collaboratively perform complex hybrid cases.
  • Reports to off-site locations, such as ICU, Cath Lab, ER, or patient rooms for emergent procedures requiring immediate intervention prior to coming to the Operating Room.
  • Cares for contaminated instruments and supplies during and after the surgical procedures utilizing appropriate environmental control techniques.
  • Participates in the on-call system for emergency and urgent cases on weekends, nights, and holidays with a 30 minute response time.
  • Participates in the clinical instruction of students and staff on all Cardiac and Vascular procedures.
  • Assists circulating nurse in providing direct patient care.
  • Maintains necessary inventory supplies, rotating stock in an orderly fashion and eliminating expired items.
  • Reports to the charge nurse for any extra assignments when current assignment is complete.
Minimum Required Qualifications

Candidates must meet one of the following categories:

Category 1
  • High School Diploma
  • Completion of a surgical technologist program sponsored by an entity holding nationally recognized institutional or programmatic accreditation
  • Must maintain a Surgical Technologist certification from an accredited certification program within six months of hire immediately following successful completion of a Surgical Technology Program
Category 2
  • Associate’s degree or equivalent certification from an accredited Surgical Technologist Program
  • Certification in Surgical Technology must be obtained within six months of hire
Category 3
  • Completion of a U.S. military training program in Surgical Technology through the Army, Navy, or Air Force
Category 4
  • Previously employed as a Surgical Technologist at a Penn Medicine healthcare facility on or before December 29, 2020, OR
  • Employed in a surgical technologist role at another healthcare facility as the primary function at any time during the two years prior to December 29, 2020.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification (BCLS)
