UPMC Somerset Surgical Technologist Job Description

Position: Full-time Surgical Technologist supporting Operating Room and GI departments.

Schedule: Variable rotating 10-hour shifts with on-call duties.

Sign-On Bonus: Up to $25,000 based on experience and commitment:

• 0-1 years: $10,000 for 2-year work commitment; $12,000 for 3-year
• 1-2 years: $12,000 for 2-year work commitment; $17,000 for 3-year
• 3+ years: $15,000 for 2-year work commitment; $25,000 for 3-year

Purpose:

Assist surgical teams under supervision to facilitate safe and effective invasive procedures, managing instrumentation, equipment, and supplies for quality patient care. Perform advanced tasks in multiple surgical specialties, prepare sterile setups, pass instruments, assist with equipment, and ensure operating room readiness and cleanliness.

Responsibilities:

• Teach skills and principles to new staff and students.
• Assist during surgeries by passing instruments, retractors, sutures; help with sponge and needle counts.
• Manage repairs, ordering, and maintenance of supplies and equipment; supervise use for safety and efficiency.
• Prepare the operating room, assemble sterile supplies, and check equipment functionality.
• Resolve technical and patient-related issues proactively to improve OR operations.
• Supervise surgical technicians, serve as shift lead, and mentor new employees and students.
• Prepare patients, assist with positioning, and maintain asepsis; support patient transfer and dressing application.
• Handle specimen care, support cost containment, and ensure medication labeling accuracy.
• Maintain knowledge of surgical specialties, collaborate effectively, and identify process improvements.
• Ensure safety, cleanliness, and readiness of the OR environment.
