Job summary

Mercyhealth in Wisconsin seeks a Surgical Technologist to support the surgical team by preparing sterile instruments and supplies, maintaining a sterile environment, and assisting during operations.

The role requires attention to detail, teamwork, and a commitment to patient safety. Duties include scrubbing, draping, instrument passing, dressing preparation, and OR prep for the next patient. Schedule is 40 hours per week, days.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited Surgical Technology program or in accreditation process.
  • NBSTSA certification preferred; required if program not accredited.
  • Less than 1 year experience as a Surgical Scrub Technologist.

Responsibilities

  • Handles instruments, supplies, and equipment during procedures.
  • Anticipates surgeon needs and understands procedure.
  • Maintains sterile field and quality patient care during operation.
  • Scrubs, gowns, gloves, and sets up sterile table with instruments and supplies.
  • Assists with patient placement and positioning.
  • Drapes sterile field according to procedure and physician preference.
  • Performs counts for sponges, needles, instruments with circulator.
  • Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants; creates sterile field.
  • Passes instruments to the surgeon; may sponge, retract, or cut suture as directed.
  • Prepares sterile dressings and applies them when directed.
  • Assists in cleaning OR and prepping room for next patient.
  • Participates in department performance improvement activities.

Job description

OVERVIEW

This role supports the surgical team by preparing sterile instruments, equipment, and supplies before, during, and after procedures while maintaining a safe, sterile environment.

The surgical technologist assists the surgeon during operations, anticipates surgical needs, and helps position patients, manage instruments, and prepare the operating room for each procedure. Attention to detail, teamwork, and a strong commitment to patient safety and quality care are essential.

Schedule: 40 hours per week. Shift: Days.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure.
  • Has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.
  • Has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly vigilant for maintenance of the sterile field.
  • Assists the surgical team before, during, and after surgery by performing the following duties: checks instruments, supplies, and equipment needed for surgical procedures.
  • Scrubs, gowns, gloves, and sets up sterile table with instruments and supplies, equipment, medication, and solutions needed for each procedure.
  • Assists with patient placement and positioning on the table.
  • Assists in draping the sterile field according to procedure and physician preference.
  • Performs appropriate counts for sponges, needles, and instruments with circulator according to policy prior to the operation and before incision is closed.
  • Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants.
  • Creates and maintains the sterile field.
  • Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during procedure.
  • Passes instruments to the surgeon during procedure.
  • May sponge operative site, hold retractors during surgery, cut suture, and cauterize previously clamped vessels as directed by surgeon.
  • Prepares sterile dressings.
  • Applies and secures dressings if applicable and at the direction of the surgeon.
  • Assists other members of the team with cleaning the operating room after each procedure.
  • Assists in prepping the room for the next patient.
  • Participates in department performance improvement activities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited Surgical Technology program required, or program currently participating in accreditation process.
  • LPN grandfathered (3) at Rockford campus.
  • Less than 1 year experience as a Surgical Scrub Technologist.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE
  • Certified Surgical Technologist through NBSTSA preferred.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist through NBSTSA required if program is not accredited but currently participating in accreditation process.
PAY RANGE

$22.73 - $34.10 per hour.
