Job summary

Join Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital in Cleveland as a Surgical Technologist. You will scrub, assist circulating, and help maintain sterile fields to support surgeons and nurses during operative procedures, contributing to high-quality patient care.

This PRN role covers day, evening, night and weekend shifts with 7:00am-7:30pm or 7:00pm-7:30am schedules, and requires BLS and relevant certification. You will work within a Magnet hospital recognized for nursing excellence.

Qualifications

• Graduate of a Surgical Technology program accredited through CAAHEP or ABHES.
• OR completion of a military surgical technology program.
• Certification as Surgical Technologist (TS-C or CST) accepted.
• BLS certification through AHA or Red Cross.

Responsibilities

• Perform scrub functions and assist in circulating under RN direction.
• Set up sterile table and ensure supplies, drugs, and equipment are available.
• Assist RN in counting sponges and instruments during surgery.
• Assist in gowning, gloving, and draping surgical team; maintain aseptic conditions.
• Participate in intraoperative timeout to ensure safety and accuracy.
• Collect, identify and label specimens; hand to circulator for disposition.

Surgical Technologists play a vital role in supporting surgeons and registered nurses throughout operative procedures, helping ensure high-quality patient care before, during, and after surgery. In this role, you will perform scrub functions, assistant with circulating duties under the direction of a Registered Nurse, and prepare and maintain sterile fields. You will check supplies and equipment, pass instruments during procedures, and support proper sterilization processes following surgery.

This is a regular PRN position, with caregivers working day/evening/night/weekend shifts between 7:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. - 7:30 a.m.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

• Perform scrub functions and assist in circulating functions under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN).
• Set up the sterile table and ensure appropriate supplies, drugs and equipment are available.
• Assists RN in counting all sponges, instruments, etc. at appropriate times during surgery.
• Assist in gowning and gloving surgical team members and draping patients.
• Ensure aseptic condition is maintained by the scrubbed surgical team through the procedure.
• Participate in the intraoperative "timeout".
• Collect, identify and label specimens removed during surgical procedures and give specimens to circulator for disposition.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

• Graduate of a SurgicalTechnology program accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES)
• OR completion of a military surgical technology program
• OR certification as a Surgical Technologist (acceptable certifications for this route are TS-C through the National Center for Competency Training or CST through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting)
• Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

• Surgical Technologist Certification from an accredited Surgical Technology Program

Physical Requirements:

• Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
• Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time.
• Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds and ability to push, pull, and navigate supply carts weighing > than 75 pounds periodically.
• Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
• Requires working under stressful conditions of working irregular hours.
• Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.
• Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work

Personal Protective Equipment:

• Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
