Job summary

United Surgical Partners International, Inc. is seeking a Surgical Technician to deliver safe and effective care in the operating room under supervision of the Center Manager and Surgeon.

You will assist in operative procedures, maintain sterile technique, and support the circulating nurse to ensure efficient patient care and infection control.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 1–2 years as Scrub Tech or Surgical Processing in multiple specialties or equivalent.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with physicians and all medical staff.

Responsibilities

  • Efficiently assists physician with operative procedures.
  • Anticipates surgeon/physician needs before and during procedures.
  • Maintains sterile field and ensures sterility of instruments and supplies.
  • Counts sponges, needles, and instruments pre- and intra-operatively with the circulating nurse.
  • Gowns and gloving for surgeons and assistants; keeps physician preference cards accurate.
  • Transports equipment and assists in cleaning/reprocessing of instrument sets.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of sterile processing and infection control; follows safety guidelines.
  • Interacts professionally with patients, families, and team members.

Job description

Under general direction from Center Manager and the supervision of the Surgeon, the Surgical Technician works to deliver safe and effective care during invasive and noninvasive procedures, anticipates the needs of the surgical team and maintains sterile field during surgical procedures in the operating room.

Responsibilities
  • Efficiently and effectively assists physician with operative procedures
  • Anticipates surgeon/physician’s needs both in preparing for procedures and during procedure
  • Demonstrates knowledge of specific responsibilities in all emergency situations
  • Ensures sterility of all supplies and instruments during set up of surgical procedures.
  • Handles instruments in a manner which prolongs “life” of instrument.
  • Assists circulating nurse and surgical team in maintaining sterile environment.
  • Assists circulating nurse in gathering necessary surgical supplies and equipment. Is responsible for doing sponge, needle, and instrument count pre-operatively and intra-operative with the circulating nurse.
  • Gowns and gloves surgeons and assistants.
  • Assists in keeping physician preference cards accurate/updated.
  • Retains all specimens to be sent to pathology, confirming source/name of specimen with surgeon.
  • Transports all surgical equipment to appropriate cleaning areas. Assists in sterile supply with cleaning and reprocessing of instrument sets.
  • Interacts appropriately and effectively with all patients/others regardless of age or ethnic background.
  • Uses Standard Universal Precautions, appropriate hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, and safe practices to ensure personal safety and a safe environment.
  • Assists with environmental hazard and infection control surveillance and participates in emergency preparedness drills.
  • Follows all equipment and safety guidelines and is responsible for knowledgeable use and care of equipment.
  • Serves as a resource to other members of the health care team.
  • Attends inservices, conferences, and meetings as required.
  • Communicates effectively and courteously with visitors, physicians, and their office staffs, patients, and employees. Maintains patient, physician, and employee privacy and confidentiality per policy.
  • Maintains designated certifications such as CPR, as offered by the center.
  • Acts in accordance with the vision, mission, and business philosophy of the Center.
  • Complies with Policies and Procedures, and adheres to safety guidelines to ensure a safe work and patient care environment.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma / GED
  • One to two years experience as a Scrub Tech or Surgical Processing in multiple specialties or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with physicians and all medical professionals.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of sterile processing.
  • Previous healthcare experience in any capacity.
  • Current certification of BLS.
