Job summary

Bayhealth Medical Center in Dover, DE seeks a Surgical Technologist in the first scrub role to support the operating room during procedures. The technician will maintain sterile technique, anticipate the surgeon’s needs, and manage instruments and supplies to ensure patient safety and efficient workflow.

Required qualifications include a High School Diploma or GED, BLS and CST within 18 months of hire, Surgical Technology program completion, and 2 years of verifiable full-time experience or TS-C

Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma or GED.
• Credential(s): BLS CST within 18 months of hire; Must be eligible to obtain certification through Surgical Technology program completion.
• Experience: 2 years of verifiable full-time experience as a Surgical Technology practitioner within the past 5 years or TS-C through NCCT.

Responsibilities

• Prepares and anticipates instrumentation, equipment and supplies for usage during the procedure.
• Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies during the procedure.
• Measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions during the procedure.
• Maintains the sterile field and operative environment.
• Coordinates equipment and robotic components for endoscopic procedures as directed by the surgeon.
• Performs terminal cleaning and prepares instruments for sterilization.

SALARY RANGE: 26.35 - 39.52 HOURLY

General Summary:

The surgical technologist in the first scrub role handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. He/she has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.

Responsibilities:

• Prepares and anticipates additional instrumentation, equipment and supplies for usage during the procedure.
• Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedure.
• Measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions utilized during the surgical procedure.
• Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon.
• Sponges or suctions the operative site.
• Applies electrocautery to clamps or forceps on bleeders.
• Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon.
• Coordinates the camera or changes out robotic arms/instruments during endoscopic surgery as directed by the surgeon.
• Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
• Performs additional counts as necessary.
• Prepares sterile dressings and/or immobilization devices.
• Prepares and passes off specimen(s) as appropriate.
• Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
• Assists other members of the team with terminal cleaning of room.
• Assists in prepping the OR for the next patient.
• Participates in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care.
• All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.

Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience:

• Education: High School Diploma or GED.
• Credential(s): Basic Life Support CST within 18 months of hire; Must be eligible to obtain certification through either:
• Surgical technology program completion.
• 2 years of verifiable full-time experience as a Surgical Technology practitioner within the past 5 years or TS-C through NCCT.
• Experience: Preferred: 1 year of hospital experience.

Preferred Education, Credential(s) and Experience:

• Education: Certificate Program Associate Degree Surgical Technology Surgical Technology.
• Credential(s): Association of Surgical Technologists Tech-in-Surgery Certified Surgical Technologist.
