Job summary

Parkland Health and Hospital System in Dallas seeks a Surgical Technologist to lead OR setup, assist during complex surgeries, and ensure documentation meets Parkland requirements.

You will work rotating shifts, 40 hours per week, with self-scheduling. Requires accredited program completion and certification; CPR card; strong aseptic technique and communication.

Qualifications

  • Has completed an accredited surgical technologist program and holds certification.
  • Certification must be through NBSTSA/NCCT or equivalent per Texas requirements.
  • CPR course completion (AHA, Red Cross, or Military Network).
  • Able to demonstrate aseptic technique and patient safety priorities.
  • Able to work flexible shifts and communicate effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Assist surgical team as scrub role, meeting team needs.
  • Set up and prepare rooms with instruments, sutures, supplies.
  • Provide guidance to Jrs and answer complex questions.
  • Communicate patient data accurately to team and management.
  • Maintain compliance with OR policies, accreditation, and laws.

Work Schedule

Operating Room: There is no exact shift. We hire for rotating shifts, 40 hours a week. We staff 24/7. We do not hire for specific shifts. This can be a combination of several shifts: 4 10's, 5 8's, 2 12's and 2 8's. We do self-scheduling, and do not take call.

  • Evenings: $3.25
  • Nights: $4.00
  • Weekends: $5.00
Primary Purpose

Serves as a lead in preparing operating rooms for surgery, providing technical services, assisting during complex surgeries, and maintaining documentation to ensure activities meet operating room, and Parkland requirements.

Requirements for Practicing Surgical Technology in the State of Texas (per Texas H.B. 643-Chapter 259):

Education/Certification
  • Has successfully completed an accredited educational program for surgical Technologist and holds and maintains certification as a surgical technologist by:
    • the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or its successor
    • the National Center for Competency Testing or its successor
    • another surgical technologist certification program approved by the department; OR
    • Has completed an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service.
CPR Course Completion Card
  • American Heart Association
  • American Red Cross Rescuer
  • Military Training Network.
Skills or Special Abilities
  • Must be able to demonstrate a basic working knowledge of surgical equipment, instruments and procedures.
  • Must be able to set priorities and perform under stressful situations.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge in use of aseptic techniques.
  • Must be able to recognize and correct immediately any breaks in aseptic technique.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to work a change in shift, or flexible hours when the work requires such changes.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with hospital staff.
  • Must be able to demonstrate patient-centered/patient-valued behaviors.
Responsibilities
  • Assists the surgical team during routine and complex operative procedures by functioning in a scrub role, ensuring that the activities meet the needs of the team.
  • Sets up and prepares rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment and cleans rooms or equipment as necessary to ensure the rooms are set up to meet the needs of the surgical procedures. Utilizes advanced knowledge of sterile and surgical techniques by practicing aseptic technique.
  • Serves as a resource in the area of clinical expertise to Surgical Technologist I's & II's in order to answer any questions and assist with complex situations.
  • Communicate patient data in an accurate, objective manner to co-workers and management, in order to ensure safe patient care.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary planning care by discussing specific cases with other team members. Assists Specialty Nurse Coordinator with service specific needs.
  • Maintains a positive working relationship with patient's, medical and administrative hospital staff, visiting physicians, visitors, interns and students to ensure personal comfort and safety of patients, and that operating room activities meet the needs of users.
  • Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals of the department and Parkland.
  • Provides training and orientation to new employees and students as required.
  • Demonstrates (via surgical practice) knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines that impact the Operating Room area. Develops effective internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding.
  • Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field of Surgical Technology by attending in-service training, seminars/workshops, reading professional journals and maintaining certification. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.

Seeks advice and guidance as needed to ensure proper understanding.
